Comparative Physiology of Vertebrate Respiration

Comparative Physiology of Vertebrate Respiration PDF Author: George Morgan Hughes
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674152502
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
This book is a concise study of the structure and function of vertebrate respiratory systems. It describes not only the individual organ systems, but also the relationship of these systems to each other and to the animal's environment. For example, the author emphasizes that a proper understanding of respiration involves a consideration of the external environment as a source of oxygen as well as the biochemistry of the cell; and, from the evolutionary point of view, that physiological changes in the respiratory and circulatory systems are dominated by the origin of the land habit. The author's approach to the subject exemplifies that trend to the amalgamation of Zoology and Physiology, which has become increasingly marked at universities and schools in recent years. This synthesis requires, broadly, a knowledge of classical comparative anatomy, ecology, evolution, physiology and biochemistry; an enormous task, but nevertheless one in which the zoologist holds a central position. This book indicates the nature of such an eclectic approach, with the animal, in its environment and its evolution, as its focal point. Covering a rapidly changing field of research the author refers to many recent views and indicates where these differ from those commonly accepted.

Vertebrates: Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution

Vertebrates: Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution PDF Author: Kenneth Kardong
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 810

Book Description
This one-semester text is designed for an upper-level majors course. Vertebrates features a unique emphasis on function and evolution of vertebrates, complete anatomical detail, and excellent pedagogy. Vertebrate groups are organized phylogenetically, and their systems discussed within such a context. Morphology is foremost, but the author has developed and integrated an understanding of function and evolution into the discussion of anatomy of the various systems.

Atlas of Comparative Sectional Anatomy of 6 invertebrates and 5 vertebrates

Atlas of Comparative Sectional Anatomy of 6 invertebrates and 5 vertebrates PDF Author: Géza Zboray
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3211997636
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
This atlas contains 189 coloured images taken from transversal, horizontal and sagittal sections of eleven organisms widely used in university teaching. Six invertebrate and five vertebrate species – from the nematode worm (Ascaris suum) to mammals (Rattus norvegicus) – are shown in detailed images. Studying the macrosections with unaided eyes, with a simple magnifier or binocular microscope might be of great help to accomplish traditional anatomical studies and to establish a certain spatial experience/space perception. This volume will be of great interest for biology students, researchers and teachers of comparative anatomy. It might act as supporting material of practical courses. Furthermore, medical practitioners, agricultural specialists and researchers having an interest in comparative anatomy might also benefit from it.

Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals

Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals PDF Author: Karen A. Terio
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 012809219X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1424

Book Description
Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals is a comprehensive resource that covers the pathology of wildlife and zoo species, including a wide scope of animals, disease types and geographic regions. It is the definitive book for students, biologists, scientists, physicians, veterinary clinicians and pathologists working with non-domestic species in a variety of settings. General chapters include information on performing necropsies, proper techniques to meet the specialized needs of forensic cases, laboratory diagnostics, and an introduction into basic principles of comparative clinical pathology. The taxon-based chapters provide information about disease in related groups of animals and include descriptions of gross and histologic lesions, pathogenesis and diagnostics. For each group of animals, notable, unique gross and microscopic anatomical features are provided to further assist the reader in deciding whether differences from the domestic animal paradigm are "normal." Additional online content, which includes text, images, and whole scanned glass slides of selected conditions, expands the published material resulting in a comprehensive approach to the topic. - 2019 PROSE Awards - Winner: Category: Textbook/Biological and Life Sciences: Association of American Publishers - Presents a single resource for performing necropsies on a variety of taxa, including terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates - Describes notable, unique gross and microscopic anatomical variations among species/taxa to assist in understanding normal features, in particular those that can be mistaken as being abnormal - Provides consistent organization of chapters with descriptions of unique anatomic features, common non-infectious and infectious diseases following brief overviews of the taxonomic group - Contains full-color, high quality illustrations of diseases - Links to a large online library of scanned slides related to topics in the book that illustrate important histologic findings
