Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Principles of Surgery Many valuable books have been published on Principles of Surgery, but some are now out of date, some give undue promi ncnoc to the writers' personal views, some are incomplete as to the subjects discussed, and some are so exhaustive as to be useful only for reference. The author does not expect the present modest volume to be free from criticism. It is simply a series of lectures based on standard authorities and is intended for the use of students and practitioners who desire the most recent views of surgical path ology and have not the time or opportunity to read more ambi tious works. Any merit the book possesses will be found in the order and system of arrangement and in the clearness and brevity of description. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Surgery IT may be considered by many that a book upon Surgery is not at the present time one of the desiderata of the medical profession; and such a remark would, I think, be quite true, if it were intended to apply to a work on the abstract principles of the science. It is not without mature consideration that I have determined upon publishing the present vol. Ume; but I have come to the conclusion, that as its contents are of a practical character, embodying the experience of twenty-five years, dur ing which time I have occupied the position of surgeon to Guy's Hos pita], it would be found useful, not only to the student, but also to those who have entered upon the practice of their profession. It must be borne in mind, that it has not been my intention to write a systematic work on the elements of the science of surgery. These lectures were originally delivered before my hospital pupils; and in thus presenting them to the profession in a collected form, my object has been to furnish a useful compendium of surgery, in which the student may meet with a clear account of the practice of that science, established, not only on my own experience, but likewise upon the best acknowledged authorities. That the practice may not bear in some cases the character of empiricism, I have endeavoured, so far as I have been able to lay down the general principles of science upon which the practice is based at the same time I have avoided as much as possible any discussion of the hypotheses of the time, deeming my practical book an unfit medium for such matter. Lectures on the American Eclectic System of Surgery (Classic Reprint)

Lectures on the American Eclectic System of Surgery (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Benjamin L. Hill

Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the American Eclectic System of Surgery Whatever fault may be found with this book, it can not be said that it was not called for; or that it contains nothing but what may be found in other works on the same subject. Without the risk of presumption, as regards himself, the author may safely claim that it presents the medi cal reader with more new and peculiar matter than any other surgical work, now in the hands of the profession. Mere novelty, however, on such a subject, would be a very questionable claim. The peculiarities of prae tice here recorded and recommended come with the sanction of experience. It may be necessary to apprise some of our readers that there are throughout this country, thousands of successful American practitioners, who in many cases rely on means and measures quite unknown to the profession in Europe, and unmention ed by the old school American writers, who do little but follow the guidance of their trans-atlantic authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Operations of Surgery, and on Diseases and Accidents Requiring Operations A surgeon, by his qualifications, must at all times be competent and prepared fearlessly to undertake the so far hazardous Operation of removing a large stone from the bladder, the source of most excruciating, most torturing pain. It is a great matter to be able, by a speedy operation, bloody, severe, and perilous to life though it be, to rid the patient of his misery, and to restore him to comfort and health. But the result is a hundred times more gratifying and creditable if, by the internal use of simple remedies, by suitable attention to diet, &c., the disease shall, in its infancy, be met and defeated, the pain alleviated and removed, and health restored with out danger, the patient being subjected neither to one moment's suffering nor to the loss of a single drop of blood.
