It is also a highly practical manual on how to defend yourself with a cane, and whether or not these 25 lessons turn you into a human threshing machine capable of delivering "150 cuts per minute!" as Leboucher claims, it will certainly spark a few ideas. The excellent illustrations of sporting Frenchmen (dressed at the height of Parisian fashion for 1843) braining, swatting, thrashing, and maiming one another with whizzing hardwood canes are sure to amuse and enlighten.

Orthopedic Care of Patients with Cerebral Palsy

Orthopedic Care of Patients with Cerebral Palsy PDF Author: Philip D. Nowicki
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030465748
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
Many of the existing books focusing on the orthopedic management of patients with cerebral palsy encompass only care for the young patient, but this practical text reviews and delineates orthopedic care for patients with cerebral palsy throughout the lifespan. Readers will find a discussion of both non-operative and operative orthopedic management across all ages and functional levels. The text presents a general overview of cerebral palsy, evaluation of patients with cerebral palsy, and procedures commonly used to treat various orthopedic conditions in patients with cerebral palsy. Spasticity management and gait evaluation are likewise highlighted, and surgical chapters cover techniques for the hip, knee, foot and ankle, and spine. It also incorporates chapters focused on issues related to the rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy, including bracing, orthotics and other durable medical equipment, physical and occupational therapy, pain management, and adaptive activities and sports, which aim to improve the overall quality of life for patients through the lifespan. Finally, there is a chapter focused on the care transition from childhood to adulthood, an area of importance often neglected in current texts covering patients with cerebral palsy. Whether in the operating room, multi-specialty clinic or private office, Orthopedic Care of Patients with Cerebral Palsy will be a go-to resource for orthopedists, pediatricians and all medical professionals caring for this population.

Exercise and Sporting Activity During Pregnancy

Exercise and Sporting Activity During Pregnancy PDF Author: Rita Santos-Rocha
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319910329
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
This clinically and practice oriented, multidisciplinary book is intended to fill the gap between evidence-based knowledge on the benefits of physical activity and exercise during pregnancy and the implementation of exercise programmes and related health promotion measures in pregnant women. It will provide medical, sports, and fitness professionals both with the knowledge needed to allay undue fears regarding the consequences of exercising during pregnancy and with the practical expertise to offer optimal guidance on exercising to pregnant exercisers and athletes. Readers will find up-to-date evidence on the psychological, social, physiological, body composition, musculoskeletal, and biomechanical changes that occur during pregnancy and their implications for physical activity and exercise. Detailed descriptions are provided of the components of exercise testing and prescription for pregnant women, the current evidence-based and practice-oriented guidelines, and exercise selection and adaptation during pregnancy. Exercises specifically targeting musculoskeletal health are discussed separately, and a concluding chapter explains the nutritional requirements in pregnant women who exercise.

Plastics from Bacteria

Plastics from Bacteria PDF Author: George Guo-Qiang Chen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642032877
Category : Science

Pages : 453

Book Description
Due to the possibility that petroleum supplies will be exhausted in the next decades to come, more and more attention has been paid to the production of bacterial pl- tics including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), biopolyethylene (PE), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), and poly(p-phenylene) (PPP). These are well-studied polymers containing at least one monomer synthesized via bacterial transformation. Among them, PHA, PLA and PBS are well known for their biodegradability, whereas PE, PTT and PPP are probably less biodegradable or are less studied in terms of their biodegradability. Over the past years, their properties and appli- tions have been studied in detail and products have been developed. Physical and chemical modifications to reduce their cost or to improve their properties have been conducted. PHA is the only biopolyester family completely synthesized by biological means. They have been investigated by microbiologists, molecular biologists, b- chemists, chemical engineers, chemists, polymer experts, and medical researchers for many years. PHA applications as bioplastics, fine chemicals, implant biomate- als, medicines, and biofuels have been developed. Companies have been est- lished for or involved in PHA related R&D as well as large scale production. It has become clear that PHA and its related technologies form an industrial value chain in fermentation, materials, feeds, and energy to medical fields.

Agents of Transculturation

Agents of Transculturation PDF Author: Sebastian Jobs
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783830980025
Category : Acculturation
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Ever since antiquity, but increasingly since the global transformation of the world order in the early modern period, communication between members of different cultural groups depended on translators, diplomats, traders, and other specialists with a knowledge of both cultures. Successful communication and traffic relied on the mediating agency of persons who had been exposed, often in their childhood or through captivities, to the customs and languages of both cultures involved in the contact. Other border crossers and go-betweens acted as missionaries, traders, political refugees, beachcombers, pirates, anthropologists, actors in zoos, runaway slaves, and itinerant doctors. Because of their frequently precarious lives, the written traces left by these figures are often thin. While some of their lives have to be carefully reconstructed through critical readings of the documents left by others (frequently by their enemies), others have left autobiographical texts which allow for a richer assessment of their function as cultural border crossers and mediators. With examples covering from various historical periods between the early modern period and the present, as well as geographical areas such as the Mediterranean, Africa, the Americas, Hawaii, New Zealand and northern Europe, scholars from various disciplines and methodological backgrounds - reaching from history to religious studies and from literary studies to ethnology - fathom the intricacies of in-betweeness and reflect on the impact which "agents of transculturation" have in situations of cultural, social and political encounters.

Bioplastics for Sustainable Development

Bioplastics for Sustainable Development PDF Author: Mohammed Kuddus
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811618232
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 733

Book Description
This book provides the latest information on bioplastics and biodegradable plastics. The initial chapters introduce readers to the various sources and substrates for the synthesis of bioplastics and biodegradable plastics, and explain their general structure, physio-chemical properties and classification. In turn, the book discusses innovative methods for the production of bioplastics at the industrial level and for the microbial production of bioplastics. It highlights the processes that are involved in the conversion of agro-industrial waste into bioplastics, while also summarizing the mechanisms of biodegradation in bioplastics. The book addresses a range of biotechnological applications of bioplastics such as in agriculture, food packaging and pharmaceutical industry, as well as biomedical applications.
