Britain and the Intellectual Origins of the League of Nations, 1914-1919

Britain and the Intellectual Origins of the League of Nations, 1914-1919 PDF Author: Sakiko Kaiga
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781108733540
Category : Political Science

Book Description
In this innovative account of the origins of the idea of the League of Nations, Sakiko Kaiga casts new light on the pro-League of Nations movement in Britain in the era of the First World War, revealing its unexpected consequences for the development of the first international organisation for peace. Combining international, social, intellectual history and international relations, she challenges two misunderstandings about the role of the movement: that their ideas about a league were utopian and that its peaceful ideal appealed to the war-weary public. Kaiga demonstrates how the original post-war plan consisted of both realistic and idealistic views of international relations, and shows how it evolved and changed in tandem with the war. She provides a comprehensive analysis of the unknown origins of the League of Nations and highlights the transformation of international society and of ideas about war prevention in the twentieth century to the present.

Book Description
Excerpt from A League of Nations The war has called forth some good books on the future international organization of the world, and others on the settlement of the war itself. To my thinking, these two questions are a single problem which must be solved as a whole. The task which for us exceeds all others in importance, and must be made to include all others, is the making of conditions which promise security from further wars. The settlement of the national, colonial, and economic questions involved in this war, must be a settlement which will help the creation, and ensure the harmonious working of a League of Nations founded to maintain peace. In this book I have tried to consider how far such a League of Nations as President Wilson has proposed, can guarantee the security of Europe. Its success will depend, not merely on the wise drafting of its constitution, but upon the solution reached in the war-settlement of our problems of nationality, colonial expansion, international trade, sea-power, and alliances. I have groped in the following chapters for an answer to this question: Under what political and economic conditions would the creation of a League of Nations be a hopeful adventure? The book was written during the summer of 1916 and finished in the last days of October. Much has happened since the manuscript was completed - the fall of the Coalition Cabinet, the German offer of negotiation, and the entry of America into the war. Revenants of the German Empire

Revenants of the German Empire PDF Author: Sean Andrew Wempe
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0190907215
Category : History

Book Description
"Revenants of a Fallen Empire reveals the various ways in which Colonial Germans attempted to cope with the loss of the German colonies after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. These Kolonialdeutsche (Colonial Germans) had invested substantial time and money in German imperialism. German men and women from the former African colonies exploited any opportunities they could to recover, renovate and market their understandings of German and European colonial aims in order to reestablish themselves as "experts" and "fellow civilizers" in European and American discourses on nationalism and imperialism. Colonial officials, settlers, and colonial lobbies made use of the League of Nations framework to influence diplomatic flashpoints including the Naturalization Controversy in South African-administered Southwest Africa, the Locarno Conference, and German participation in the Permanent Mandates Commission from 1927-1933. Sean Wempe revises standard historical portrayals of the League of Nations' form of international governance, German participation in the League, the role of interest groups in international organizations and diplomacy, and liberal imperialism. In analyzing Colonial German investment and participation in interwar liberal internationalism, the project also challenges the idea of a direct continuity between Germany's colonial period and the Nazi era"--
