The pace of change in the diversity of executive leadership teams in US higher education institutions has been slow. In particular, women are underrepresented and Asian women are acutely underrepresented compared to the potential candidate population. At the same time, articles and research highlighting important performance and financial benefits from increasing women in executive teams continues to emerge. This study focused on insights from the leadership development journeys of five successful Asian women executives in US higher education. The purpose of this narrative study was to examine how these women described their leadership development journeys and whether critical reflection impacted their leadership development. Key insights from their stories were highlighted from interviews for aspiring Asian women candidates to better prepare for their career advancement. These insights include practical advice on mentor and network strategies as well as behavioral advice for aspiring candidates to develop skills to be more assertive and take calculated risks in reaching for stretch positions. Insights are also documented for academic institutions to improve their leadership development construct, including improved training formats, development programs and selection processes. There are many research reports which explore gender differences in leadership and a few that focus on minority challenges. However, the discussion of Asian women in the context of educational leadership is limited and this research will contribute to leadership studies.

This report examines the literature on the status of Asian Pacific American (APA) women and is based on a review of research studies, campus climate and diversity reports, focus group and individual interviews representing a range of colleges and universities, and the author's own observations in academe over two decades. The report finds that APA women have demonstrated significant increases in bachelor's, master's, and first-professional degrees over the past decade but continue to lag behind male counterparts. The report also finds that APA women are underrepresented in many fields of study at all degree levels, in doctoral studies, as faculty, and at higher levels of academic administration; that many APA women find an inhospitable campus climate; that they are evaluated differently and lack a sense of community with their colleagues; and that APA professional staff cite invisibility and marginalization. The report notes that the "model minority" stereotype penalizes APA women by assuming they do not need academic or professional guidance and support, and that class and cultural biases reinforce APA women as "outsiders" in academe. This study investigates the experiences of Asian American and immigrant Asian faculty members and administrators in the U.S. higher education. The motivation of this study was, in spite of the rising presence and educational attainment, Asian American and immigrant Asian women are notably underrepresented in academic leadership roles. Asian American women fall far behind White females in leadership positions in higher education. Grounded in a theoretical framework guided by Mohanty's Post Colonialist Feminist Criticism, a qualitative research has been conducted where 15 female participants (faculty members and/or administrators in the U.S. higher education), who identified themselves as Asian Americans or immigrant Asians, were interviewed. Data analysis focused on the interview transcripts while coding categories and finding themes. Based on each research question, categories and themes have been described based on patterns. This study focuses on three primary areas, which include the experiences of the participants, their way of combatting challenges, and the role of support system and mentors in their journeys. Findings show that almost all of these 15 participants experienced gender and racial discrimination at varied levels both inside and outside classrooms. Sometimes it was easy for them to decipher whether the discrimination was based on race or gender, sometimes it became difficult. They felt women of color lived in the intersection of multiple jeopardy. Along with racial and gender discrimination, these women talked about discriminations based on their short height and dressing. As a result, most of them expressed disinterest in pursuing or continuing with leadership roles in academia. All participants unanimously admitted the importance of mentoring in shaping their careers. Implications for policy, practice, theoretical framework, recommendations, and future research are discussed.

There is considerable literature documenting the need to diversify leadership in higher education. When data tracking diversity is reported, representation is most often given in binary terms such as people of color versus White population. Although diversity has recently increased at colleges and universities, senior leadership remains predominantly White holding over 50% of these positions. When an intersectional framework is included, gender is most often added to binary terms making the complexity of both gendered and raced experiences of minoritized women invisible. This study introduces modernized South Asian women who make up an important and growing number of higher education leaders. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of 14 South Asian women who are leading at colleges and universities in the United States. The semi-structured interviews were conducted using Zoom virtual meetings. Each participant illustrated their perspective as they navigate through historical stereotypes and assumptions stemming from the model minority myth. The themes which emerged from this study: (a) identity acceptance in which the South Asian women represent dual roles according to gendered expectations; (b) navigating placement in which the recognition of inclusion and exclusion sets the direction of their involvement at their institutions and, (c) breaking barriers in which the South Asian women utilize the advantages of the model minority myth for equity and gender inclusion. These findings collectively contribute to the extensive body of literature accessible on race, gender and inclusion. The findings from the study identified their experiences as key factors in their transitional journeys to leadership. The recommendations from this study are stemmed from the findings for both institutional and individual practice and implementation. Active effort from higher education leaders to develop formal diversity and inclusion taskforces provides opportunity to reach diverse aspiring leaders. Recommendations for South Asian women as individuals seeking inclusion should focus on finding networks and mentorship programs geared towards equitable access to leadership.
