Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.7 (73), University of Hertfordshire, course: Leadership and Management Development, language: English, abstract: Anglo-French Wines Direct (AFW), a multinational company based in the UK, established a ‘High Flyers Programme’ four years ago to develop future leaders to enable to achieve its global growth objectives. The aim was to send them to one of the international subsidiaries for two years and bring them back for a more senior position. However, the new HR Director of AFW has discovered the following problems within this programme: 1. 25 percent of the expatriates returned home early due to dissatisfaction. 2. Over 35 percent of the expatriates were considered to be underperforming on the assignment. 3. Around 30 percent expatriates left within a year of their return to England. In order to achieve its business objectives, it is essential that AFW turns round this failing programme into a leading-edge leadership programme. Particularly since AFW is a large company and plans to expand its business further, it is according to Burgoyne (1988, cited in Gold et al., 2010) vital that the programme has a high level of maturity, i.e. complexity and structure, enabling to meet the organisational needs and objectives. Thus, AFW needs to take a strategic and integrative approach and manage each stage of the ‘International Assignment Cycle’ (See Appendix 1), i.e. recruitment and selection, hiring, preparation, expatriation and repatriation, effectively. Accordingly, this report aims to present a mix of solutions regarding each stage and provide recommendations for evaluating the new programme to ensure its effectiveness.

Managing Performance Abroad

Managing Performance Abroad PDF Author: Arno Haslberger
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136278613
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
In a global economy full of multinational firms, international human resource management (including expatriation, career management, and talent management) is a growing topic in the business and management literature and in universities. A thorough understanding of the adjustment of expatriates to their new environment is critical not only for selection and preparation of potential expatriates, but also for the management of expatriate performance. Managed well, expatriates can be key contributors to organizational success while abroad and even after repatriation. Poor understanding and management of expatriate issues, on the other hand, may lead to underperformance and increased turnover of expatriates and repatriates. Managing Performance Abroad summarizes and extends what is known about the topic of expatriate management and adjustment, covering all the major authors and presenting a new approach to the adjustment process. At present, expatriate adjustment is only covered as a chapter in books on international HRM and HRD. Much of this literature relies on outdated concepts and evidence. Furthermore, most business research and management publications use an expatriate adjustment model that was originally published about two decades ago. This book is the first dedicated solely to the subject of expatriate adjustment, enabling readers to formulate research questions and hypotheses and to develop expatriation policies and support systems that optimize the performance of expatriates. It presents a re-formulation of the model underlying management research about expatriate adjustment, providing guidance for researchers and practitioners alike.

Expatriation. A critical review of the literature on expatriates

Expatriation. A critical review of the literature on expatriates PDF Author: Audrey Noumazalayi Ilounga
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3668311315
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, Tongji University, language: English, abstract: Female expatriation is a studied but still quite undertapped question for academics to explore. If expatriation in general has generated a lot of literature with various approaches, female expatriation still revolves around one traditional theme. Based on the realisation that the number of female expatriates is quite lower than the one of their male counterparts, academics focused on analysing the barriers that would prevent more women to initiate expatriation. Many studies then explored the potential solutions to identify and overcome successfully such obstacles. This type of approach underlines the dynamics and influences prior to departure.

Expatriates and Managing Global Mobility

Expatriates and Managing Global Mobility PDF Author: Soo Min Toh
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000644782
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Multinational enterprises continue to rely heavily upon expatriates as part of their global workforce. These expatriates, whose exact employment contract may take different forms, are assigned to help them develop global skills as well as to foster knowledge transfer. But managing this expatriate workforce is extremely complex, requiring a questioning of assumptions and sensitivity to new social and cultural dynamics. This book sets out to examine the problem of expatriate management through an I/O Psychology lens. Each chapter draws upon the expertise of scholars from around the world to provide insights into the latest research findings and remaining needs, pertaining to a wide variety of issues. The contributors of this book review the current state of the research of the issue at hand and then make recommendations for where the new frontiers of the research should be in the coming decades. This volume covers four sets of issues pertaining to expatriate management and global mobility in depth. First, the different decision points organizations must make about assigning someone to an overseas location for some period of time; second the different categories of employees in the multinational corporation and their unique characteristics and challenges; third, the various issues and implications of managing a globally mobile workforce; and fourth, the unique contexts of global mobility. Overarching future research themes are identified that lay out the research agenda for the coming decades. By bringing together key research, this book aims to help I/O psychologists understand, explore, and identify new ways of contributing to the understanding of the issues involved in managing an expatriate workforce. Incorporating state-of-the art I/O psychology research in this unique context bears the promise of yielding important new paradigms and practices.

Book Description
Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 73 (outstanding), University of Hertfordshire, course: Leadership and Management Development, language: English, abstract: Anglo-French Wines Direct (AFW), a large multinational company based in UK, established a ‘High Flyers Programme’ four years ago in order to develop middle and senior managers of the future to enable the achievement of its global growth objectives. The aim was to send them to one of the international subsidiaries for two years and bring them back for a more senior position in the UK. However, the new Global HR Director of AFW has discovered several problems associated with this leadership programme. More precisely, she identified the following three types of assignment failure: 1. 25 per cent of the expatriates returned home early due to dissatisfaction. 2. Over 35 per cent of the expatriates who remained in post were considered to be underperforming compared to local management’s expectations of them. 3. Around 30 per cent of those who completed their postings, left within a year of their return to England. These outcomes, however, are not attributable to a particular cause but are rather influenced by a variety of factors which will be analysed more closely in this report. Generally speaking, it can be assumed that the reasons for the present difficulties are mainly due to an ineffective management of the ‘Ideal International Assignment Cycle’ (see Figure 1) which includes the key components recruitment and selection, hiring, preparation, expatriation and repatriation and will be elaborated on below: [...]
