Plus tard, cette réponse a été incriminée dans les lésions néonatales ou fœtales qui conduisent à la paralysie cérébrale. Plusieurs auteurs s’accordent sur le fait qu’une chorioamniotite clinique chez la mère augmente le risque de paralysie cérébrale chez cet enfant, d’autant plus s’il est prématuré. L’infection intra-utérine peut conduire à l’activation des cytokines, qui, à leur tour, peuvent causer des lésions de la substance blanche et une naissance prématurée au travers d’un risque augmenté de rupture prématurée des membranes. Enfin, un rôle prépondérant de la vaginose bactérienne est avancé comme étant à l’origine de cette infection intra-utérine ; les micro-organismes envahissant le vagin remonteraient les voies génitales avant d’atteindre la cavité amniotique. Le dépistage et le traitement de cette vaginose bactérienne s’annoncent très importants dans le cadre de la grossesse afin d’envisager pouvoir enrayer cette cascade de conséquences
