Introduction : La prescription médicale est gouvernée par de nombreux déterminants, certains médicaux, d’autres non, aux premiers rangs desquels se trouvent le médecin, le patient ainsi que la relation qui les unit. Mais comment évolue cette dernière si le praticien oppose un refus à une demande explicite du patient? Méthode : Pour évaluer l’impact du refus de prescription sur la relation médecin-patient nous avons choisi de réaliser une enquête sous forme de sondage d’opinion par le biais des forums santé et d’Internet. Nous avons recueilli près d’un millier de données quantitatives mais également des commentaires libres laissés par les internautes, permettant une approche qualitative du refus de prescription et de ses conséquences éventuelles. Résultats : Dans notre étude, un tiers des patients répondants se sont déjà retrouvés confrontés à un refus de prescription. L’analyse de cette partie de notre échantillon nous a permis de mettre en évidence que ce n’était pas le refus de prescription en lui-même qui avait un impact sur la relation médecin-patient après un refus mais les explications fournies par le médecin lors de celui-ci. Cette analyse quantitative est très largement relayée par les données qualitatives de notre enquête. Conclusion : Le refus de prescription est possible à envisager lors de chaque demande explicite émanant d’un patient. Il n’altère pas la relation médecin-patient dès lors que le praticien explique son refus à son patient et prend le temps de l’écouter. La médecine du futur doit considérer cette dimension humaine autant que les progrès de la science.
