Le vieillissement de la population française augmente progressivement la part de patients âgés dans la patientèle des médecins généralistes. Leurs conditions de vie et leurs pathologies souvent nombreuses nécessitent une prise en charge particulière dépassant parfois les connaissances des généralistes. L'objectif principal de cette étude est d'évaluer le recours à la gériatrie et ses freins en médecine générale. Une étude qualitative a été réalisée sous forme d'entretiens semi-dirigés menés à l'aide d'une carte mentale auprès d'un échantillon varié de 15 médecins généralistes des Hauts-de-Seine en 2019. Les entretiens abordent les besoins des médecins généralistes dans la prise en charge des patients âgés aussi bien dans la prévention que dans le suivi des pathologies chroniques ou l'urgence. On retrouve un consensus des généralistes dans le recours au gériatre pour les troubles cognitifs ou les urgences. Pour les autres pathologies gériatriques, il existe une disparité au sein de notre échantillon. Les médecins généralistes qui travaillent fréquemment avec les gériatres sont ceux qui les sollicitent le plus et qui en retirent le plus de bénéfices pour eux comme pour leurs patients. Les principaux freins retrouvés sont un accès difficile à la gériatrie pour le médecin généraliste comme pour le patient ainsi qu'à la structure hospitalière dans laquelle ils exercent. Les médecins généralistes sont dans l'ensemble demandeurs d'appui pour la prise en charge complexe des personnes âgées. Des rencontres régulières entre gériatres et généralistes permettraient probablement une meilleure connaissance des compétences et champs d'action de chacun et ainsi une meilleure collaboration.
