Un livre choc qui tombe à pic : enfin un autre discours sur les réseaux sociaux! Ces fameux réseaux sociaux ont rencontré une progression fulgurante (qui d’entre nous n’a pas au moins une fois entendu vanter la supposée "extraordinaire influence" de Twitter ?). Cependant, il semble qu’aujourd’hui nous sommes en train de vivre un tournant dans la perception que nous avons de ces "nouveaux services" : le temps de la déception est en train de se développer désormais. La déception devient flagrante, même fatigante (émergence des termes comme "Facebook fatigue"). Dans les chapitres de cet ouvrage, nous avons tout d’abord fait un rappel du contexte afin de bien poser les éléments : le succès de ces services, l’historique qui a précédé et accompagné leur avènement et les usages qui s’en sont dégagés. Ensuite, nous sommes allés à la rencontre des utilisateurs français les plus visibles, les fameux "blogueurs référents", afin de recueillir leurs témoignages et de vérifier quelques hypothèses. À partir de là, il était facile de dérouler nos constatations : les usages et comportements négatifs s’accumulaient ; favorisés, encouragés voire même organisés par la nature même de ces services. Nous mettons en avant des données chiffrées, des références extérieures et des graphiques qui permettent de mesurer l’ampleur de ces phénomènes. En d’autres mots, ce phénomène tourne à la farce : les blogeurs référents sont -souvent- ridicules, Twitter est surévalué, Facebook déborde de bêtises et le niveau des échanges constatés est -majoritairement- effarant de médiocrité ! On comprend alors pourquoi les comportements moutonniers sont si fréquents et comment hélas, cela risque de s’amplifier. Pour aller au-delà des critiques, nous proposons finalement une bonne manière de profiter de ces services de façon intelligente et modérée.

The Violence of Modernity turns to Charles Baudelaire, one of the most canonical figures of literary modernism, in order to reclaim an aesthetic legacy for ethical inquiry and historical critique. Works of modern literature are commonly theorized as symptomatic responses to the trauma of history. In a climate that tends to privilege crisis over critique, Debarati Sanyal argues that it is urgent to rethink literary experience in terms that recall its contestatory potential. Examining Baudelaire's poems afresh, she shifts the focus of critical attention toward an account of modernism as an active engagement with violence, specifically the violence of history in nineteenth-century France. Sanyal analyzes a literary current that uses the traditional hallmarks of modernism—irony, intertextuality, self-reflexivity, and formalism—to challenge the historical violence of modernity. Baudelaire and the committed ironists writing in his wake teach us how to read and resist the violence of history, and thereby to challenge the melancholy tenor of our contemporary "wound culture." In a series of provocative readings, Sanyal presents Baudelaire's poetry as an aesthetic form that contests historical violence through rhetorical strategies of complicity, counterviolence, and critique. The book develops a new account of Baudelaire's significance as a modernist by dislodging him both from his traditional status as a practitioner of "art for art's sake" and from his more recent incarnation as the poet of trauma. Following her extended analysis of Baudelaire's poetry, Sanyal in later chapters considers a number of authors influenced by his strategies—including Rachilde, Virginie Despentes, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre—to examine the relevance of their interventions for our current climate of trauma and terror. The core aim of this book is to determine how anthropology and demography can be used in conjunction in the field of population and development. The boundaries of demography are not as clearly defined or as stable as one might think, especially in view of the tension between a formal demography centered on the ‘core of procedures and references’ and a more open form of demography, generally referred to as Population Studies. Many rapprochements, missed opportunities and isolated attempts marked the disciplinary history of anthropology and demography, both disciplines being founded on distinct and highly differentiated traditions and practices. Moreover, the role and the place assigned to epistemology differ significantly in ethnology and demography. Yet, anthropology and demography provide complementary models and research instruments and this book shows that neither discipline can afford to overlook their respective contributions. Based on research conducted in West Africa over more than twenty years, it is a defense of field demography that makes case for a continuum ranging from the initial conception of fieldwork and research to its effective implementation and to data analysis. Changes in behaviors relating to fertility, poverty or migration cannot be interpreted without invoking the cultural factor at some stage. Representations in their collective and individual dimensions also fit into the extended explanatory space of demography.
