L'importance de la référence antique dans la culture, les arts et les lettres, les débats philosophiques et politiques, l'enseignement et la formation des élites, les récits de voyages et les recherches érudites a maintes fois été soulignée sans qu'aucune approche d'ensemble n'ait jusqu'à présent été tentée. Pour construire un objet d'étude qui n'est pas donné a priori - l'antiquité gréco-romaine au dix-huitième siècle - cette thèse d'histoire s'attache à évoquer la culture des Lumières françaises (1680-1789) - dans ses formes les plus variées, et analyse un système de référence et des mécanismes intellectuels ou l'antiquité n'a souvent d'antique que le nom. Le plan général s'organise autour de trois axes: il est tout d'abord question de la connaissance au travers des lieux et des ouvrages ou elle s'acquiert et se transmet (1: Le système éducatif: la Faculté des arts; 2: L'institution académique; 2: L'étude des vestiges; 4: Les sources livresques). Le premier bilan concerne donc le sort de l'héritage humaniste. Le second volet est consacré aux modèles et à leur diffusion, en relation avec une querelle célèbre et quelques paradigmes fondamentaux (5: L'antiquité des anciens et celle des modernes; 6: Antiquité, bonheur et vertu; 7: Antiquité, nature et culture; 8: La mode et la diffusion des modèles). L'étude des enjeux religieux et historiques fait l'objet de la troisième partie (9: Histoire sacrée, histoires profanes; 10: Christianisme et paganisme; 11: Temps et conscience historique; 12: Le tribunal de l'histoire). Pour mettre en relief la complexité de la chronologie, cet ouvrage comporte, en appendice, une bibliographie qui recense de 1650 à 1789 les traductions nouvelles et les publications ayant trait l'antiquité. Cette liste, qui n'a pas la prétention d'être exhaustive, est complétée par divers tableaux récapitulatifs relatifs aux fouilles archéologiques, aux grands recueils, aux sujets des peintures d'histoire et aux hypothèses des chronologistes qui fournissent d'utiles points de repère. Ce livre apporte un enrichissement indispensable à notre connaissance du XVIIIe siècle français.

Friendship, an acquired relationship primarily based on choice rather than birth, lay at the heart of Enlightenment preoccupations with sociability and the formation of the private sphere. In Brotherly Love, Kenneth Loiselle argues that Freemasonry is an ideal arena in which to explore the changing nature of male friendship in Enlightenment France. Freemasonry was the largest and most diverse voluntary organization in the decades before the French Revolution. At least fifty thousand Frenchmen joined lodges, the memberships of which ranged across the social spectrum from skilled artisans to the highest ranks of the nobility. Loiselle argues that men were attracted to Freemasonry because it enabled them to cultivate enduring friendships that were egalitarian and grounded in emotion. Drawing on scores of archives, including private letters, rituals, the minutes of lodge meetings, and the speeches of many Freemasons, Loiselle reveals the thought processes of the visionaries who founded this movement, the ways in which its members maintained friendships both within and beyond the lodge, and the seemingly paradoxical place women occupied within this friendship community. Masonic friendship endured into the tumultuous revolutionary era, although the revolutionary leadership suppressed most of the lodges by 1794. Loiselle not only examines the place of friendship in eighteenth-century society and culture but also contributes to the history of emotions and masculinity, and the essential debate over the relationship between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.
