Cette thèse étudie la possibilité d'un découplage absolu entre la consommation d'énergie et la croissance économique. Elle se compose de quatre chapitres. Le chapitre 1 dresse un bilan critique des principales méthodes utilisées pour apprécier l'existence du découplage absolu et conclut à la nécessité d'étudier le rôle joué par l'énergie dans le processus de croissance économique. Aussi, les chapitres 2 et 3 sont-ils consacrés à l'analyse des théories de la croissance. Le chapitre 2 traite du cadre néoclassique. Il examine la proposition d'une partie de l'économie écologique d'intégrer les lois de la thermodynamique aux fonctions de production agrégée. Le chapitre 3 porte son analyse sur les courants néo-physiocratiques et classiques. Il évalue la capacité de leurs théories de la valeur respectives (valeur-énergie et valeur-travail) à articuler correctement les dimensions physiques et monétaires de la production. Sur cette base, il compare la manière qu'ont ces deux modélisations de la croissance de faire apparaître les contraintes énergétiques. Enfin, le chapitre 4 propose une exploration empirique du cadre classique. A partir de données de panel portant sur la période 1995-2019, il vérifie l'existence d'un canal du taux de profit en testant la significativité des variations du prix relatif de l'énergie sur le taux de profit. Ce travail économétrique est complété par une discussion des travaux postkeynésiens quant à la relation entre profit et accumulation du capital.
