L'Ordre des chirurgiens-dentistes a été créé par le général de Gaulle en 1945. Il y a bien eu une section dentaire du Conseil national de l'Ordre des médecins fondée par le maréchal Pétain et le gouvernement de Vichy alors que la France est occupée par les Allemands. Si on doit à la section dentaire le code de déontologie et l'entraide confraternelle aux victimes et prisonniers de guerre, sa mission première a été d'éradiquer les juifs de la profession dentaire. Cette structure sera annulée après la guerre par le général de Gaulle lui-même sur décret. Les deux institutions restent différentes par leurs actions et leurs missions respectives, même si on ne peut oublier les enseignements de l'histoire qui doivent participer au devoir de mémoire et servir comme garant d'une institution ordinale contemporaine.

The early decades of the eighteenth century saw the appearance of a completely new type of surgical practitioner in France: the dentiste. The use of this title was of the utmost significance, indicating not just the making of a new practitioner but of an entirely new practice - the dentiste was, quite literally, making a name for himself. Appearing on the back of dramatic changes within surgery in general, the practice of the dentiste, although it focused only on the teeth, was nevertheless extensive. In addition to extractions, there was also a wide-ranging field of operations on offer, the performance of which had only been hinted at by the surgeon of the seventeenth century. This new sphere of practice represented a radical departure from what had gone before and, as this book reveals, it was all built solidly on sound surgical foundations, with the dentiste occupying a respected position within society in general and the medical world in particular. This book places the making of the dentiste within social, political and technical contexts, and in so doing re-contextualises the purely progressive stories told in conventional histories of dentistry. In doing so, it brings surgery back to its central role in this story, and reveals for the first time the origins of the dentise in the French surgical profession.

Les modes d'exercice du chirurgien-dentiste sont très variés. On note quand même une prédominance pour l'exercice libéral individuel suivi de près par l'exercice au sein d'une société civile de moyen. La majorité des praticiens sont satisfaits de la structure dans laquelle ils exercent et ne changeraient pas de mode d'exercice s'ils le pouvaient. Par contre, on note un réel problème démographique. De plus, tous les chirurgiens-dentistes n'exploitent pas leurs diplômes car en 2008, environ 5000 praticiens inscrits au tableau de l'ordre n'exerçaient pas. Il faut donc se pencher sérieusement sur la question: pourquoi n'exerçaient-ils pas? La réponse est peut-être due au fait qu'ils ne trouvaient pas de statuts leurs convenant. Ne devrait-on pas créer de nouveaux statuts afin que ces personnes là puissent exercer?
