Le brossage dentaire chez les enfants reste un sujet complexe de par la multitude de recommandations contradictoires existantes et par les nombreuses techniques et outils (brosses à dents, dentifrices...) disponibles sur le marché. Ce travail fait tout d'abord le point à travers la littérature sur l'hygiène bucco-dentaire infantile puis une étude clinique en cross-over a été réalisée auprès de 75 enfants de 7 à 10 ans scolarisés, sur deux périodes de 19 jours. Son but a été de comparer l'efficacité dans l'élimination de plaque entre une brosse à dents électrique sonique et une manuelle, par le biais de l'indice d'hygiène orale simplifié. Les résultats ont montré que la brosse à dents électrique permettait une meilleure diminution des taux de plaque en bouche entière, mais surtout au niveau des zones facilement accessibles. Cette étude montre la nécessité d'un renforcement de l'éducation à l'hygiène chez les plus jeunes.

La brosse à dent électrique est-elle plus efficace que la brosse à dent manuelle chez l’enfant ? Y a-t-il un intérêt à ce qu’un enfant soit supervisé par un parent au moment du brossage ? Si oui jusqu’à quel âge ? Voici les questions posées dans cette thèse. L’évaluation concernant l’utilisation de la brosse à dent électrique chez l’enfant, ainsi que la technique de brossage à privilégier, ont fait l’objet d’une revue de littérature. Nous avons cherché à savoir si l’association de la brosse électrique à un enseignement de brossage par un professionnel permettait à l’enfant d’être autonome, ou bien s’il était nécessaire que l’enfant soit assisté par un adulte. Pour répondre à cette question, une étude interventionnelle a été menée sur un échantillon d’environ 40 enfants âgés de 4 à 7 ans et suivis pendant 2 mois au sein de l’Unité Fonctionnelle de l’Enfant et de l’Adolescent de l’Hôpital Rothschild à Paris. Tous les enfants ont reçu la même brosse à dent électrique et ont été répartis en 2 groupes homogènes : « brossage électrique avec supervision parentale » et « brossage électrique sans supervision parentale ». L’hygiène bucco-dentaire des enfants a été évaluée tous les 15 jours à l’aide de l’indice de plaque de Quigley et Hein modifié par Turesky et de l’indice gingival de Silnesset Löe.
