Selectivity in Chemical Reactions
Author: J.C. Whitehead
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940093047X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 562
Book Description
The aim of this Workshop on "Selectivity in Chemical Reactions" was to examine the specific preferences exhibited by simple chemical reactions with regards to reagents having particular energy states, symmetries, alignment and orientation and the resulting formation of certain products with their corresponding energies, states, alignment and polarisation. Such problems come close to the ultimate goal of reaction dynamics of being able to determine experimentally and theoretically state-to-state cross sections and stereochemical effects under well defined and characterised conditions. There are many examples of highly selective and specific processes to be found in atmospheric and combustion chemistry and the production of population inversions amongst vibrational and electronic states lies at the heart of the development of chemical laser systems. Only when we can understand the fundamental processes that underlie the selectivity in the formation of products in a chemical reaction and the specific requirements of initial states of the reagents, can we expect to be able to develop the explanatory and predictive tools necessary to apply the subject to the development of new laser systems, efficient combustion schemes and specific methods of chemical synthesis, to the control of atmospheric pollution and to all problems in which it is necessary to direct the outcome of a chemical reaction in a specific way. The brief given to the Workshop was to critically review the field, to discuss the present limitations and difficulties and to identify new directions.

Chemical and Biochemical Applications of Lasers V4
Author: C. Bradley Moore
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323150829
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 427
Book Description
Chemical and Biochemical Applications of Lasers, Volume IV focuses on the practical applications of standard commercial laser systems. This book examines the structural studies of DNA by fluorescence microscopy and discusses photochemistry and structural spectroscopy. Organized into eight chapters, this volume starts with an overview of a few cases of laser-induced fluorescence studies of biological molecules. This text then examines the sharp fluorescence spectra of complex molecules in solids that are obtained when a narrow-band laser selectively excites molecules in particular sites. Other chapters describe the theory and application of resonance Raman spectroscopy to various biological systems. This book provides as well a thorough treatment of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy and its application in combustion diagnostics and analytical chemistry. The final chapter explores laser control of the sequential photochemical reaction of the drug psoralen with the two strands of the DNA double helix. Physicists, chemists, electrochemists, and chemical engineers will find this book useful.

Research in Progress
The Chemical Dynamics and Kinetics of Small Radicals
Author: Kopin Liu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810229849
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 622
Book Description
This book highlights recent progress in the chemistry of radicals. Developments include the growing use of lasers to generate radicals, the application of lasers to provide state, angular, polarization, energy and real-time resolution in kinetics and dynamics experiments, the development of theories for handling the reactions of radicals, and the simulation of the reaction dynamics of increasingly larger systems for direct comparison to experimental results. The book emphasizes the increasing interaction between experimental dynamics, kinetics and theory. It is appropriate for chemistry graduate students and researchers about to enter the field. However, the discussions of some topics progress to a more advanced level so that even an expert will find the book useful.
