Unsteady Combustion

Unsteady Combustion PDF Author: F. Culick
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400916205
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.

Development of Laser Diagnostics Techniques for Combustion

Development of Laser Diagnostics Techniques for Combustion PDF Author: Quaid Rafique Vohra

Pages : 67

Book Description
Studying turbulent combustion at the fundamental level is a primary requirement to construct robust, accurate, efficient models to predict the performance of complex combustion systems. Laser based diagnostics offer significant advantage of probing multiple facets of the combustion processes simultaneously and are capable of providing quantitative information of the highly coupled phenomenon. Design of a vitiated co-flow burner is presented for laser diagnostics of turbulent flames. A foundation was laid to be able to perform Rayleigh scattering, Coherent Ani-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy, Heterodyne velocimetry and Particle scattering. Experiment facilities were developed and tests were performed for feasibility, and performance of test equipment. The present work focused on developing facilities for combined diagnostics of, temperature, species, concentration and velocity measurement. Machine vision cameras were studied for their performance with Rayleigh scattering for temperature, high resolution spectrometer is put to test to resolve rotational/vibrational bands from chemiluminesence for species concentration. An optical design for Narrowband CARS is presented. An experimental setup for multiphase turbulent flow is presented and methods were developed for image analysis in a multiphase turbulent flow. An experimental setup for simultaneous measurement of gas species concentration, particle concentration and particle velocity is presented. The final section discusses analysis of diode lasers and optics to perform seedless Laser Heterodyne Velocimetry. The current work also discusses some of the common problems and solutions for laboratory experiments using laser diagnostics.

Laser-based Diagnostics for Transient Species in Hydrocarbon Flames

Laser-based Diagnostics for Transient Species in Hydrocarbon Flames PDF Author: Richard Copeland

Category : Hydrocarbons

Book Description
Detection of chemically important transient species is crucial to understanding the mechanism of hydrocarbon combustion. Though they often occur in low concentrations, these species determine the pathways and rates of many reaction steps. In this report we describe our efforts to develop and quantify diagnostic methods to measure these species in flames. We will describe methods to detect CH, CH3, C2H2, CH2, and HO2; the first four species have successfully been observed in flames during this project. The detection techniques we use are laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and absorption techniques including photoacoustic detection spectroscopy (PAD). The polyatomic molecules mentioned above are much more difficult to detect than the diatomic molecules CH and OH, and we have developed and used new variations on the basic techniques to achieve the desired sensitivity. In this research, we improved diagnostic techniques for the radicals mentioned above, detected species not previously observed in the flame environment, and increased our knowledge of the important species in hydrocarbon combustion.

Combustion Measurements

Combustion Measurements PDF Author: Norman Chigier
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781560320289
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 556

Book Description
The book begins with an introduction to the general problems of making measurements in high temperature and a presentation of chemically reacting flow systems. It describes each instrument with the various diagnostic techniques and discusses measurements that have been made in furnaces, flames, and rocket engines. The detailed measurement techniques described in this book cover a wide spectrum of applications in combustion systems, including gas turbine, rocket measurement techniques that were developed in laboratories. Information obtained on detailed temperature, velocity, particle size, and gas concentration distribution is leading to improve understanding of the chemical combustion process and to design imporvements in combustors.

Experimental Investigation of Stratified Combustion

Experimental Investigation of Stratified Combustion PDF Author: Saravanan Balusamy
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783659225130
Category : Combustion
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
In order to better understand the stratified combustion, the propagation of flame through stratified mixture field in laminar and turbulent flow conditions has been studied by using combined PIV/PLIF techniques. A great emphasis was placed on developing methods to improve the accuracy of local measurements of flame propagation. In particular, a new PIV approach has been developed to measure the local fresh gas velocity near preheat zone of flame front. To improve the resolution of measurement, the shape of interrogation window has been continuously modified based on the local flame topology and gas expansion effect. Statistical analysis of conditioned local measurements by the local equivalence ratio of flames allows the characterization of the properties of flame propagation subjected to the mixture stratification in laminar and turbulent flows, especially the highlight of the memory effect.
