This study of South American cinema offers a new way of approaching the variety of films available in the region. It brings to light the interconnectivity between state-run institutions (film councils, cinemateques, archives), altruistic bodies (film festival funds, NGOs) and commercial organisations (production companies, exhibitors and distributors). Examples of filmmakers, policy initiatives, funding sources and alternative film networks combine to produce a rich overview of one of the most significant sites for non-Western filmmaking in the twenty-first century. There is an awareness of the place South American cinema has on the international stage and, for this reason, the study involves an in depth look at the way film products are circulated within national boundaries and through external global circuits. This event confirms its primary objective of providing perceivable, aesthetic (and synaesthetic) feedback on the theoretical contents addressed at the conference through lectures, debates and posters, proving over time, in the editions that have followed, to be capable of stimulating debate This particular edition, in line with the conference, aims to underline the challenge between the digital and the material: this is the interpretative key that we asked of both the authors of the preliminary essays anticipating the collection of works, and the authors of the video projects. Hybridisation was expressed on several levels, which can be summarised in two main trends: in the sources, where nature and the kinematics of the elements, e.g. liquids or gasses, are a source of inspiration; or in the hybridisation of techniques where the material and the digital alternate. From Wild Tales to Zama, Argentine cinema has produced some of the most visually striking and critically lauded films of the 2000s. Argentina also boasts some of the most exciting contemporary poetry in the Spanish language. What happens when its film and poetry meet on screen? Moving Verses studies the relationship between poetry and cinema in Argentina. Although both the poetics of cinema and literary adaptation have become established areas of film scholarship in recent years, the diverse modes of exchange between poetry and cinema have received little critical attention. The book analyses how film and poetry transform each another, and how these two expressive media behave when placed into dialogue. Going beyond theories of adaptation, and engaging critically with concepts around intermediality and interdisciplinarity, Moving Verses offers tools and methods for studying both experimental and mainstream film from Latin America and beyond. The corpus includes some of Argentina's most exciting and radical contemporary directors (Raúl Perrone, Gustavo Fontán) as well as established modern masters (María Luisa Bemberg, Eliseo Subiela), and seldom studied experimental projects (Narcisa Hirsch, Claudio Caldini). The critical approach draws on recent works on intermediality and impure cinema to sketch and assess the many and varied ways in which directors read poetry on screen.
