The Politics of Survival
Author: Steven M. Zdatny
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195363108
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
The problem of the general political inclinations of the petite bourgeoisie, and especially its relationship to fascism, is one of the major questions currently facing historians dealing with European society in the past one hundred years. Independent artisans have at best been seen as an anachronism in the industrial age. Often, they are regarded as the social basis of the fascist movements of the 1920s and 30s because of their supposedly reactionary class interests. Unfortunately, such sweeping analyses--by both Marxists and non-Marxists alike--have been based largely on one case, that of Germany. It is France however, that has been considered the pre-eminent nation of the petit bourgeois, and fascism had only limited appeal there. This is the central question Zdatny addresses in this book as he examines the social and political history of the archetypical petite bourgeois, the self-employed craftsmen of France.

Families and Frontiers
Author: Kathryn Edwards
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900447577X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 446
Book Description
As put forth by Edwards, the eastern duchy and the western county of Burgundy constituted a frontier society from the death of Charles the Bold in 1477 until 1540. Through detailed case studies and family reconstructions of elites from the Saône River valley, specifically the cities of Dijon, Dole, and Besançon, this book examines the social, cultural, political, and economic relationships of the Burgundians on a local level. Edwards successfully challenges the national models still frequently used in modern historiography and offers a provocative alternative to better understand this anomalous area and the creation of pre-modern regional identity.

Peasants into Frenchmen
Author: Eugen Weber
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 0804710139
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 631
Book Description
France achieved national unity much later than is commonly supposed. For a hundred years and more after the Revolution, millions of peasants lived on as if in a timeless world, their existence little different from that of the generations before them. The author of this lively, often witty, and always provocative work traces how France underwent a veritable crisis of civilization in the early years of the French Republic as traditional attitudes and practices crumbled under the forces of modernization. Local roads and railways were the decisive factors, bringing hitherto remote and inaccessible regions into easy contact with markets and major centers of the modern world. The products of industry rendered many peasant skills useless, and the expanding school system taught not only the language of the dominant culture but its values as well, among them patriotism. By 1914, France had finally become La Patrie in fact as it had so long been in name.

Labor Before the Industrial Revolution
Author: Thomas Max Safley
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351251074
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
One cannot conceive of capitalism without labor. Yet many of the current debates about economic development leading to industrialization fail to directly engage with labor at all. This collection of essays strives to correct this oversight and to reintroduce labor into the great debates about capitalist development and economic growth before the Industrial Revolution. By attending to the effects of specific regulatory, technological, social and physical environments on producers and production in a set of specific industries, these essays use an “ecological” approach that demonstrates how productivity, knowledge and regime changed between 1400 and 1800. This book will be of interest to researchers in history, especially labor history, and European economic development.
