Theo Van Doesburg

Theo Van Doesburg PDF Author: Paul Dujardin
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300222432
Category : Art, Dutch
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Résumé en 4ème de couverture: "After the First World War, the European avant-gardes longed for change and hoped for a better future. More than any other artist, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) took part in this reconstruction effort by broadening Piet Mondian's Neoplastic aesthetic to all disciplines: painting, sculpture, architecture and the applied arts. Theo van Doesburg proposed a genuine revolution that sought to transform the world in every way, to create a new kind of artistic expression, wich would interact not only with life in all its complexity but also with scientific and technological developments. His constantly changing approach brought together apparently incompatible innovation, as demonstrated by this move toward Elementarism and then to Art Concret. To champion his project on the international stage, Van Doesburg, who was also the founder of th De Stijl movement and its magazine, succeeded in bringing together all the leading artists. He is recognized as much for his visual achievements as for his means of accomplishing a philosophical, artistic an collective ideal. Many artists, including Mondrian, would largely owe their internation renown to Theo van Doesburg."

Awu's Story

Awu's Story PDF Author: Justine Mintsa
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 1496206932
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, villages in the Fang region of northern Gabon must grapple with the clash of tradition and the evolution of customs throughout modern Africa. With this tension in the background, the passionate, deft, and creative seamstress Awu marries Obame, after he and his beloved wife, Bella, have been unable to conceive. Because all three are reluctant participants in this arrangement, theirs is an emotionally fraught existence. Through heartbreaking and disastrous events, Awu grapples with long-standing Fang customs that counter her desire to take full control of her life and home. Supplemented with a foreword and critical introduction highlighting Justine Mintsa’s importance in African literature, Awu’s Story is an essential work of African women’s writing and the only published work to meditate this deeply on some of the Fang’s most cherished legends and oral history.

Manual of Romance Word Classes

Manual of Romance Word Classes PDF Author: Anna-Maria De Cesare
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110746476
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 826

Book Description
Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research. The Manual is intended as a reference work for all scholars and students interested in the description of both the standard, major Romance languages and the smaller, lesser described Romance(-based) varieties.

The Odyssey of an Apple Thief

The Odyssey of an Apple Thief PDF Author: Moishe Rozenbaumas
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 0815654723
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
In The Odyssey of an Apple Thief, Moishe Rozenbaumas (1922–2016) recounts his fascinating life, from his Lithuanian boyhood, to the fraught experiences that take him across Europe and Central Asia and back again, to his daring escape from Soviet Russia to build a new life in Paris. Along the way, we get a rarely seen portrait of the lives of working-class Jewish youth in Telz/Telsiai, a religious town renowned for its yeshiva. We hear of the games children played, the theft of apples from a Catholic orchard, and Rozenbaumas’s early apprenticeship as a tailor once his father leaves the country. The war breaks out and the teenaged Rozenbaumas flees Lithuania alone, unable to convince his mother and sibling to go with him. We learn of his life as a starved refugee in an Uzbek kolkhoz, his escape into the Red Army, and his unlikely work in the reconnaissance unit of the Soviet Army. After the war, Rozenbaumas is drafted into the Marxist-Leninist university and as a cadre of the Communist Party, ultimately escaping in 1956 with his family to Paris, where he and his wife give an openly Jewish education to their children. In the vast literature of memory written by Jewish witnesses before, during, and after WWII, Rozenbaumas’s account stands out for the singularity of his experience and for his deft narration of events of mythological dimension from a personal perspective. The Odyssey of an Apple Thief offers not only invaluable testimony of this historical moment but also an illuminating and original portrait of Lithuanian Jews in the twentieth century.
