Analytical and experimental investigations were made to determine the landing characteristics of a re-entry spacecraft equipped with a verticalcylinder air bag for impact load alleviation. Assuming a rigid body and isothermal air compression and expansion, computations were made to determine accelerations for a landing on concrete from a flight-path angle of 90 degrees (vertical flight path) at a contact attitude of 0 degrees. Two models (1/6 and 1/2 scale) of the air-bag system were tested. A 1/6-scale dynamic model of a spacecraft--air-bag configuration proposed for manned re-entry was landed on concrete, on sand, and in calm water from various flight paths for a range of contact attitudes. Reasonable agreement between computed and experimental data indicates that the scaling technique developed is satisfactory for prediction of fullscale characteristics from model tests with air bags in atmospheric environment. The maximum accelerations obtained during landings on sand were about 11g along the X-axis and about 8g along the Z-axis. The maximum accelerations obtained during landings in water were about 10g along the X-axis and about 6g along the Z-axis. (Author).

Model tests were made to determine the landingimpact characteristics of a parachute-supported reentry capsule that had a compliable metal structure as a load-alleviating device. A 1/6scale dynamic model having compliable Al-alloy legs designed to give a low onset rate of acceleration on impact was tested. Landings were made on concrete, sand, and water. The maximum acceleration encountered was approximately 35g and the maximum onset rate was 2,000 g/sec. The model tumbled in landings on concrete at the 55 degrees flight-path, + or - 30 degrees contact-attitude conditions; therefore, loadalleviating devices on the canister end of the model would be required. To evaluate the scaling characteristics of compliable metal structures, models were tested with 1/4.1-scale and fullscale Al-alloy legs. The maximum vertical accelerations and strokes obtained from tests of the 1/4.1-scale and full-scale legs were the same within the recording accuracy of the equipment. (Author).

Hypersonics is the study of flight at speeds where aerodynamic heating dominates the physics of the problem. It is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is this important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric reentry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline, but work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well.
