New Techniques and Technologies for Statistics II PDF Author:
Publisher: IOS Press

Pages : 312

Book Description
The compilation and deployment of statistical techniques is nowadays almost universally based on computing systems. Rapidly changing technology is expanding the options available for improving the quality, range and delivery of statistics whilst reducing the cost, and at the same time is putting pressure on producers and users to keep up with the latest techniques, both as management views develop of what is possible and simply through peer group pressure. In the areas of official statistics, it is clear that new technologies will change our approach to the whole range to activities from systems design, through data collection, processing, analysis and dissemination, to the structure of the European Statistical System and internal organization of national statistical institutes. Eurostat has a central role in promoting and coordinating the development and use of statistics in public administrations, which extends to the adoption of new techniques and technologies as they are proven validated. An important aspect of this role is to anticipate needs, to stimulate, encourage and fund research work of common interest, to support national initiatives and to prove a forum for discussion. In this new book techniques and technologies in statistics are described. The needs and constraints of official staticians are described as well as the latest developments of researchers. The book presents the research and development projects funded by the European Commission in the development of statistical tools and techniques under the R&D framework programme and the progress to date in the current Development of Statistical Information Systems (DOSIS) programme.

Computing in Statistical Science through APL

Computing in Statistical Science through APL PDF Author: Francis John Anscombe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461394503
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
A t the terminal seated, the answering tone: pond and temple bell. ODAY as in the past, statistical method is profoundly affected by T resources for numerical calculation and visual display. The main line of development of statistical methodology during the first half of this century was conditioned by, and attuned to, the mechanical desk calculator. Now statisticians may use electronic computers of various kinds in various modes, and the character of statistical science has changed accordingly. Some, but not all, modes of modern computation have a flexibility and immediacy reminiscent of the desk calculator. They preserve the virtues of the desk calculator, while immensely exceeding its scope. Prominent among these is the computer language and conversational computing system known by the initials APL. This book is addressed to statisticians. Its first aim is to interest them in using APL in their work-for statistical analysis of data, for numerical support of theoretical studies, for simulation of random processes. In Part A the language is described and illustrated with short examples of statistical calculations. Part B, presenting some more extended examples of statistical analysis of data, has also the further aim of suggesting the interplay of computing and theory that must surely henceforth be typical of the develop ment of statistical science.

Modeling and Stochastic Learning for Forecasting in High Dimensions

Modeling and Stochastic Learning for Forecasting in High Dimensions PDF Author: Anestis Antoniadis
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319187325
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
The chapters in this volume stress the need for advances in theoretical understanding to go hand-in-hand with the widespread practical application of forecasting in industry. Forecasting and time series prediction have enjoyed considerable attention over the last few decades, fostered by impressive advances in observational capabilities and measurement procedures. On June 5-7, 2013, an international Workshop on Industry Practices for Forecasting was held in Paris, France, organized and supported by the OSIRIS Department of Electricité de France Research and Development Division. In keeping with tradition, both theoretical statistical results and practical contributions on this active field of statistical research and on forecasting issues in a rapidly evolving industrial environment are presented. The volume reflects the broad spectrum of the conference, including 16 articles contributed by specialists in various areas. The material compiled is broad in scope and ranges from new findings on forecasting in industry and in time series, on nonparametric and functional methods and on on-line machine learning for forecasting, to the latest developments in tools for high dimension and complex data analysis.

Geographical Models with Mathematica

Geographical Models with Mathematica PDF Author: Andre Dauphine
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0081022301
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
Geographical Models with Mathematica provides a fairly comprehensive overview of the types of models necessary for the development of new geographical knowledge, including stochastic models, models for data analysis, for geostatistics, for networks, for dynamic systems, for cellular automata and for multi-agent systems, all discussed in their theoretical context. The author then provides over 65 programs, written in the Mathematica language, that formalize these models. Case studies are provided to help the reader apply these programs to their own studies. - Provides theoretical, stochastic and dynamic system models - Covers data science, both in a spatial and spatio-temporal analysis - Presents a microstructural understanding of the mechanical behavior of granular materials

Energy Terminology

Energy Terminology PDF Author: World Energy Conference
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483286541
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 564

Book Description
In this new edition standard energy terms in worldwide use are presented in 19 sections collectively containing over 1300 terms covering both conventional and modern sources, technology, equipment and supply systems, in English, French, German and Spanish. Three new sections are introduced: Forecasting and Methodology, including general and more specific terms relating to quantitative economic energy forecasting; Uses of Energy, ranging from terms associated with consumers and energy supply to terms concerned with industrial and chemical usage; and Measurement and Control Technology, which covers instrumentation, techniques and safety terminology. Fully indexed and specially designed for rapid cross-reference, this glossary is a useful reference guide for all scientists, technical writers and economists with an interest in this field.

Alternative Approaches to Time Series Analysis

Alternative Approaches to Time Series Analysis PDF Author: J. P. Florens
Publisher: Facultes Universitaires Saint-Louis
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the third Franco-Belgian Meeting of Statisticians held in Rouen (France) on November 25-26, 1982. They reflect the diversity of approaches presently developed in the statistical analysis of Time Series. Some papers present the actual state of research on fundamental problems; others propose new approaches. The first two contributions are devoted to the analysis of time series and to prediction without strong assumptions on the distributions (qualitative harmonic analysis and non-parametric Bayesian prediction). Then various papers are concerned with problems of model selection (choice among linear models, among non-linear models, non-parametric tests, autocorrelation function...). A third group of papers investigates the statistical properties of completely specified parametric models (asymptotic Bayesian analysis, properties of ARMA models, dynamic models with limited dependent variables). The last paper is devoted to a problem in economic analysis relies on the theory of stochastic processes.
