Book Description
Native American tales of the medicinal sulfur springs found in what is now Lampasas County drew settlers and, later, tourists who sought cures for various ailments throughout the 19th century. The region soon became known as the "Saratoga of the South," and when the first passenger train arrived in Lampasas in 1882, it opened a new market for the local waters. Entrepreneurial citizens capitalized on the springs, building bathhouses, opera houses, and other amenities. In 1884, the Lampasas County Courthouse was built--the third-oldest Texas courthouse still in use today. Vestiges of Lampasas's heyday are found in Hanna Springs and Hancock Park, which remains a thriving recreational area with a free-flow sulfur pool and an 18-hole golf course. Public murals, a sculpture garden, historic sites, and a proud engaged community draw people to Lampasas County today.

Book Description
It was the legendary sulfur springs that attracted Lampasas' first permanent settlers in 1853. Texas pioneer Moses Hughes and his ill wife, Hannah, journeyed to the region after hearing rumors of the area's medicinal waters from Native Americans. Hannah's health improved, and her recovery was credited to drinking and bathing in the springs. Others soon followed and settled throughout the region's wild Texas frontier. The book "Images of America: Lampasas County," released Monday, offers a glimpse into the community's history through 128 pages of vintage photographs and captions spanning from the county's founding in 1856 to the early 1960s. Compiled by the Lampasas County Museum Foundation, the paperback chronicles the area's natural resources and disasters, businesses, schools, architecture, and perhaps most intriguing - the people.

The Courthouses of Central Texas

The Courthouses of Central Texas PDF Author: Brantley Hightower
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292762941
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
The county courthouse has long held a central place on the Texas landscape—literally, as the center of the town in which it is located, and figuratively, as the symbol of governmental authority. As a county's most important public building, the courthouse makes an architectural statement about a community's prosperity and aspirations—or the lack of them. Thus, a study of county courthouses tells a compelling story about how society's relationships with public buildings and government have radically changed over the course of time, as well as how architectural tastes have evolved through the decades. A first of its kind, The Courthouses of Central Texas offers an in-depth, comparative architectural survey of fifty county courthouses, which serve as a representative sample of larger trends at play throughout the rest of the state. Each courthouse is represented by a description, with information about date(s) of construction and architects, along with a historical photograph, a site plan of its orientation and courthouse square, and two- and sometimes three-dimensional drawings of its facade with modifications over time. Side-by-side drawings and plans also facilitate comparisons between courthouses. These consistently scaled and formatted architectural drawings, which Brantley Hightower spent years creating, allow for direct comparisons in ways never before possible. He also explains the courthouses' formal development by placing them in their historical and social context, which illuminates the power and importance of these structures in the history of Texas, as well as their enduring relevance today.
