Dans le contexte actuel de mondialisation, l'Afrique souffre de marginalisation politique et économique. Pourtant, les Africains sont de plus en plus nombreux. La population du continent va presque doubler dans les quarante ans qui viennent, passant de 750 millions de personnes en 2006 à 1,4 milliard en 2040. Pour mieux définir ses stratégies, l'Agence française de développement (AFD) a chargé le Centre Population et Développement (CEPED) d'examiner toutes ces questions en proposant à des chercheurs spécialisés d'évaluer les enjeux démographiques du développement durable en Afrique.
