The labour movement in Lebanon
Author: Lea Bou Khater
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526159422
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 173
Book Description
The labour movement in Lebanon: Power on hold narrates the history of the Lebanese labour movement from the early twentieth century to today. Bou Khater demonstrates that trade unionism in the country has largely been a failure, for reasons including state interference, tactical co-optation, and the strategic use of sectarianism by an oligarchic elite, together with the structural weakness of a service-based laissez-faire economy. Drawing on a vast body of Arabic-language primary sources and difficult-to-access archives, the book’s conclusions are significant not only for trade unionism, but also for new forms of workers’ organisations and social movements in Lebanon and beyond. The Lebanese case study presented here holds significant implications for the wider Arab world and for comparative studies of labour. This authoritative history of the labour movement in Lebanon is vital reading for scholars of trade unionism, Lebanese politics, and political economy.

Book Description
A wide-reaching analysis of post-World War II U.S. policy in Lebanon posits that the politics of oil and pipelines figured far more significantly in U.S. relations with Lebanon than previously believed. By reevaluating U.S.-Lebanese relations within the context of America's collaborative intervention with the Lebanese ruling elite, Gendzier aptly demonstrates how oil, power, and politics drove U.S. policy as well as influenced the development of the state and region of Lebanon.

Gender Inequality in the Workplace in Lebanon
Author: Alaa El Kurjieh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Gender inequality in the workplace is one of the various forms of discrimination that women face worldwide. Research showed that although the Lebanese legal system seems to be more advanced compared to other Arab countries, yet the number of women involved in the workplace remains lower than expected. Although the Lebanese Labour Law prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, age and so on providing equal opportunity in employment and access to jobs; gender gap in the workplace still exists. Then, it can be realized that the existing policies fail to achieve equal representation of men and women in the workplace which signifies that major steps must be taken to solve this issue. It is suggested that changes on the Lebanese Labor Law to be more effective and considerate to the barriers that hinder the progress of women into the market, and ensuring that it is applied and implemented efficiently along with the internal policies in the organizations, are key steps to eliminate the forms of discrimination against women and reduce the gender gap in the workplace.
