The data for the study come from a sample survey conducted by the author in an urban area of India. The findings show that the average earnings of women are lower than those of men, even when women are equally qualified and efficient, and that wage differences are due to deliberate discrimination against women in the labor market. The findings also indicate that deliberate wage discrimination against women is not entirely responsible for differences in earnings between males and females; unequal distribution of education and other economic characteristics which influence earnings cause substantial wage differences between the sexes.
