La Ventilation Non Invasive (VNI) est une technique de ventilation dont l'efficacité en réanimation n'est plus à démontrer. Elle a tendance à sortir des réanimations depuis plusieurs années, vers les services d'urgence, et les unités de surveillance continue, apparus en rance au début des années 2000. Ce travail a pour objectif de décrire la population bénéficiant de VNI à l'USC et surtout de mettre en évidence des facteurs de risque d'échec de cette VNI en USC à travers les critères de mutation en réanimation (critère principal), taux d'intubation et de mortalité. Nous avons mené une étude rétrospective monocentrique, incluant sans exception les 149 patients qui ont reçu de la VNI entre le 3 mai 2010 et le 31 décembre 2012 Les principales indications sont les décompensations de BPCO et les insuffisances respiratoire aigues de novo. Nous avons retrouvé un taux de transfert en réanimation à 21%, un taux d'intubation à 15% et une mortalité à 7 ,25%, ce qui est conforme à la moyenne des études internationales sur le sujet, en réanimation. Les patients venant des urgences ont un taux de transfert à 56%, et les BPCO un taux de transfert, d'intubation et de mortalité supérieur au reste des patients. La VNI en USC semble être utilisable en USC. Malgré tout, les patients atteints de BPCO et ceux venant des urgences ont un taux de mutation en réanimation plus élevé, et une prudence accrue doit être de mise chez ces patients, voire même un passage systématique en réanimation discuté

Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

While the number of vector-borne diseases and their incidence in Europe is much less than in tropical and/or developing countries, there are nevertheless a substantial number of such infections in Europe. The most important one is the zoonotic arbovirus infection Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE), a virus transmitted to humans by ticks or by consumption of unpasteurized dairy products from infected cows, goats, or sheep. TBE is endemic in the non-tropical Eurasian forest belt with most cases occurring in Russia and in central and eastern parts of Europe. In endemic areas, TBE is one of the most important causes of viral meningitis/encephalitis and a major public health concern. Moreover, TBE is becoming more and more frequent in Europe due to the appearance of new endemic areas and increasing awareness. However, it might be difficult to diagnose TBE, because clinical manifestations tend to be relatively nonspecific. Although a standardized case definition across the European Union has existed now for a few years, national implementation of TBE programs, including regular screening and diagnosis, are done in only very few countries. Therefore, wide differences in the intensity and quality of national surveillance of TBE cases still exist, and the true burden of disease and the areas with circulation of the TBE viral subtypes in Europe and Asia are not fully known. Moreover, although safe and effective vaccines are available, vaccination uptake in most endemic countries is too low to reduce the TBE burden significantly. The authors of “The TBE Book’ therefore have tried to compile in this “working book” the most recent and relevant aspects of TBE.
