Tal como demuestran, entre otros momentos, las luchas de los pueblos indígenas y afroamericanos por el reconocimiento de sus tradiciones, la exigencia de la interculturalidad es tan antigua como la misma historia social e intelectual de América Latina. Sin embargo, ha sido muy escaso el eco que ha encontrado dicha exigencia en la filosofía latinoamericana actual. La presente obra se ocupa precisamente de los desafíos de naturaleza intercultural con los que nuestro tiempo confronta a esta filosofía, obligándola así a una labor de autocrítica.
