La existencia de determinadas diferencias entre mujeres y hombres que van mucho más allá de las biológicas, siendo en su mayoría la distribución desigual entre actividades o sectores feminizados en los que predominan una serie de riesgos, afectarán de manera más intensa al grupo de personas que lo frecuenta. La creciente participación de la mujer en el mercado laboral, las diferencias tanto de género como biológicas que hacen a las trabajadoras sensibles a determinados riesgos, los cambios en la pirámide demográfica laboral con más activos en los estratos de más edad, los cambios en las formas de trabajar con el aumento de la temporalidad, trabajo a turnos, nocturno, los cambios en la organización del trabajo con fuertes ritmos dirigidos a alcanzar mayores rendimientos, dan lugar al surgimiento de patologías u otros procesos relacionados con la salud laboral bien distintos entre mujeres y hombres. Circunstancias que hacen imprescindible la modificación de las herramientas de gestión de la PRL, la normativa que la regula y la concepción general de la salud laboral, integrando la perspectiva de género en todo momento, y muy especialmente en las políticas de salud laboral.
