National History and New Nationalism in the Twenty-First Century

National History and New Nationalism in the Twenty-First Century PDF Author: Niels F. May
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000396347
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
National history has once again become a battlefield. In internal political conflicts, which are fought on the terrain of popular culture, museums, schoolbooks, and memorial politics, it has taken on a newly important and contested role. Irrespective of national specifics, the narratives of new nationalism are quite similar everywhere. National history is said to stretch back many centuries, expressesing the historical continuity of a homogeneous people and its timeless character. This people struggles for independence, guided by towering leaders and inspired by the sacrifice of martyrs. Unlike earlier forms of nationalism, the main enemies are no longer neighbouring states, but international and supranational institutions. To use national history as an integrative tool, new nationalists claim that the media and school history curricula should not contest or question the nation and its great historical deeds, as doubts threaten to weaken and dishonour the nation. This book offers a broad international overview of the rhetoric, contents, and contexts of the rise of these renewed national historical narratives, and of how professional historians have reacted to these phenomena. The contributions focus on a wide range of representative nations from around all over the globe.

What is Québécois Literature?

What is Québécois Literature? PDF Author: Rosemary Chapman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 1846319730
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
The question 'What is Québécois literature?' might seem innocent and easily answerable. But as Rosemary Chapman shows in this compelling study, answering that question requires no less than the charting of the entire cultural history of French Canada, the contextualizing of francophone writing in Canada within postcolonialism, and the challenging of literary history to rethink its nation-based framework. Brilliantly navigating these ambitions, she provides the first major literary history of Québec, what will be compulsory reading for scholars in francophone postcolonial studies and an ideal introduction for anglophone scholars of Canadian literature.

Babies for the Nation

Babies for the Nation PDF Author: Denyse Baillargeon
Publisher: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
ISBN: 1554581095
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
Described by some as a “necropolis for babies,” the province of Quebec in the early twentieth century recorded infant mortality rates, particularly among French-speaking Catholics, that were among the highest in the Western world. This “bleeding of the nation” gave birth to a vast movement for child welfare that paved the way for a medicalization of childbearing. In Babies for the Nation, basing her analysis on extensive documentary research and more than fifty interviews with mothers, Denyse Baillargeon sets out to understand how doctors were able to convince women to consult them, and why mothers chose to follow their advice. Her analysis considers the medical discourse of the time, the development of free services made available to mothers between 1910 and 1970, and how mothers used these services. Showing the variety of social actors involved in this process (doctors, nurses, women’s groups, members of the clergy, private enterprise, the state, and the mothers themselves), this study delineates the alliances and the conflicts that arose between them in a complex phenomenon that profoundly changed the nature of childbearing in Quebec. Un Québec en mal d’enfants: La médicalisation de la maternité 1910—1970 was awarded the Clio-Québec Prize, the Lionel Groulx-Yves-Saint-Germain Prize, and the Jean-Charles-Falardeau Prize. This translation by W. Donald Wilson brings this important book to a new readership.
