Book Description
Changes in family structures, demographics, social attitudes and economic policies over the last 60 years have had a large impact on family lives and correspondingly on family law. The Second Edition of this Handbook draws upon recent developments to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date global perspective on the policy challenges facing family law and policy round the world. It also focuses on divorce and separation and their consequences, the relationship between civil law and the law of minority groups, refugees and migrants and the movement of family members between jurisdictions along with assisted conception, surrogacy and adoption. This advanced-level reference work will be essential reading for students, researchers and scholars of family law and social policy as well as policymakers in the field.

Understanding Sharia Processes

Understanding Sharia Processes PDF Author: Farrah Ahmed
Publisher: Hart Publishing
ISBN: 9781509920754
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
"The question of whether liberal states such as the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Australia should recognise sharia family law processes has attracted increasing debate and controversy in recent years. While the reasons for opposition to sharia processes are complex, they often feature the concern that sharia processes disadvantage Muslim women. However, to date there has been inadequate attention to the experiences of participants in sharia processes. The book will address two key questions namely; how liberal legal systems like Australia's should respond to sharia processes, and more specifically; how it can best respond to the needs of Muslim women who use these processes. In doing so, this book offers unique evidence to inform future policy developments in Australia that will also have implications for other liberal jurisdictions. In this way, this book makes a significant contribution to the international discussion and response to sharia processes"--

Incorporating Un Convention on Rights

Incorporating Un Convention on Rights PDF Author: Ursula Kilkelly
Publisher: Intersentia
ISBN: 9781780689920
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) requires States Parties to take all appropriate measures to implement the rights in the Convention. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Convention?s adoption, focus has shifted onto the measures being taken at national level to give effect to children?s rights with specific reference to legal incorporation both direct and indirect. The way in which the CRC is given legal effect is highly contingent upon the constitutional and legal systems of individual countries and can best be understood by those writing from the specific national context. So this book combines individual contributions that address the experience of legal incorporation in selected countries by their national experts, with comparative analysis of the international landscape from the world?s leading authorities on legal implementation of the CRC. The jurisdictions covered in this book include Australia, Scotland, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, Iceland, Wales, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Mexico and China.

Hawking Incorporated

Hawking Incorporated PDF Author: Hélène Mialet
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226522261
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
These days, the idea of the cyborg is less the stuff of science fiction and more a reality, as we are all, in one way or another, constantly connected, extended, wired, and dispersed in and through technology. One wonders where the individual, the person, the human, and the body are—or, alternatively, where they stop. These are the kinds of questions Hélène Mialet explores in this fascinating volume, as she focuses on a man who is permanently attached to assemblages of machines, devices, and collectivities of people: Stephen Hawking. Drawing on an extensive and in-depth series of interviews with Hawking, his assistants and colleagues, physicists, engineers, writers, journalists, archivists, and artists, Mialet reconstructs the human, material, and machine-based networks that enable Hawking to live and work. She reveals how Hawking—who is often portrayed as the most singular, individual, rational, and bodiless of all—is in fact not only incorporated, materialized, and distributed in a complex nexus of machines and human beings like everyone else, but even more so. Each chapter focuses on a description of the functioning and coordination of different elements or media that create his presence, agency, identity, and competencies. Attentive to Hawking’s daily activities, including his lecturing and scientific writing, Mialet’s ethnographic analysis powerfully reassesses the notion of scientific genius and its associations with human singularity. This book will fascinate anyone interested in Stephen Hawking or an extraordinary life in science.

Understanding Global Sexualities

Understanding Global Sexualities PDF Author: Peter Aggleton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136278125
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Over the course of the past thirty years, there has been an explosion of work on sexuality, both conceptually and methodologically. From a relatively limited, specialist field, the study of sexuality has expanded across a wide range of social sciences. Yet as the field has grown, it has become apparent that a number of leading edge critical issues remain. This theory-building book explores some of the areas in which there is major and continuing debate, for example, about the relationship between sexuality and gender; about the nature and status of heterosexuality; about hetero- and homo-normativity; about the influence and intersection of class, race, age and other factors in sexual trajectories, identities and lifestyles; and about how best to understand the new forms of sexuality that are emerging in both rich world and developing world contexts. With contributions from leading and new scholars and activists from across the globe, this book highlights tensions or ‘flash-points’ in contemporary debate, and offers some innovative ways forward in terms of thinking about sexuality – both theoretically and with respect to policy and programme development. An extended essay by Henrietta Moore introduces the volume, and an afterword by Jeffrey Weeks offers pointers for the future. The contributors bring together a range of experiences and a variety of disciplinary perspectives in engaging with three key themes of sexual subjectivity and global transformations, sexualities in practice, and advancing new thinking on sexuality in policy and programmatic contexts. It is of interest to students, researchers and activists in sexuality, sexual health and gender studies, especially those working from public health, sociological and anthropological perspectives.
