Play in Childhood

Play in Childhood PDF Author: Margaret Lowenfeld
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521413312
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
There is at present a worldwide resurgence of interest in the meaning and importance of children's play. Dr Margaret Lowenfeld was one of the leading figures in child psychology in the years between the two world wars, and her ideas have profoundly influenced our thinking about play in childhood. She recorded these ideas and described her methods in one major book, Play in Childhood, first published in 1935. This new volume in the series Classics in Developmental Medicine faithfully reproduces the original Lowenfeld text, while bringing the references in line with modern practice and presenting the book in a contemporary style. Many of Lowenfeld's techniques described in this book are still available and widely used today: the Lowenfeld Mosaic Test, the Lowenfeld World Technique, Poleidoblocs, and Kaleidoblocs. Lowenfeld's original accounts of these techniques and the thoughts behind them are now available once again to all working with young children, and this book should be of great interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, primary school teachers, and research workers in the field of human development.

"French Paintings of Childhood and Adolescence, 1848?886 "

Author: Anna Green
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135156644X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 343

Book Description
The premise of Anna Green's timely and original book, is that nineteenth-century representations of childhood and adolescence-in paintings, but also in other forms of visual culture and in diverse written discourses of the period-are critical for understanding modernity. Whilst such well-worn signifiers for modernity as the city, the dandy and the prostitute have been well mined, childhood and adolescence have not. Paintings of the young produced in France from 1848 to 1886, Green contends, inform not only our understanding of modern life but also our perception of modernist or avant-garde painting. Figuring largely are Manet and the Impressionists, as well as a gamut of more traditional painters of children who are crucial in providing context for the avant garde. Because modernity is an essentially urban phenomenon, Green's focus is primarily on the city, usually Parisian, child. The painted youth of her study are organized initially by class and gender. Then the chapters are structured according to themes (parent-child relations, modes of discipline, work, education, and play, the spectacle, sexuality) that straddle the congruences among the book's triple trajectory: the young, their modernist representations, and the experience of modernity. Green's interdisciplinary approach ensures that this book will be of interest not only to art historians but to all those concerned with the cultural and social history of childhood.

Psychology of Early Childhood

Psychology of Early Childhood PDF Author: William Stern
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351614444
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 775

Book Description
Originally published in 1924, this sixth edition published in 1930 is thoroughly revised and updated to take account of the important advances in the field of child psychology at the time. In this new edition the personal standpoint is emphasized, while at the same time other psychological theories such as mental psychology, form psychology, psychoanalysis and individual psychology have been exhaustively treated, criticized and discussed in contradistinction to the theory of personality. Much fuller treatment has been given to the experimental examination of young children for purposes of research and tests, since it is in this form of investigation that major advances had been made. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
