Book Description
Excerpt from La Peinture Française Au Xixe Siècle, Vol. 1 Count de Caylus in i74s, later Winkelmann and Quatre mere de Quincy, were among those who brought back into fashion a taste for Antiquity and the grande maniere in pain ting inspired by neo-greek sculpture. David was both their collaborator and their executor. As a man he served the Revo lutian with the zeal of a partisan, as a painter he considered it his duty to the state to teach only such principles as glorify the antique virtues, the fruits of reason and which repudiate the fetes galantes of the Eighteenth Century. Thanks to David, for years Beauty. Was limited in its inspiration to Archaeology, Athens, Greece, and the aged Horatii. In the same way we find Ingres, about ib4o, a prisoner of the traditions of the institute, applying, in the name of Phidias and Raphael, prin ciples fully as pernicious when employed by feeble collaborators. Forthough the Institute had Ingres, it also had Picot, Hersent, Blondel, just as it later had Ge'rome, in other words a rigid organism which only allowed pupils to have a certain sense of Art, and where the recipes of a hand-book on painting would enable the student to make a career in his profession rather express his personality. Painting and Sculpture in Europe 1780-1880
Author: Fritz Novotny
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300053210
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 488
Book Description
From the Classicism of Jacques-Louis David to the Realism of Courbet and the Early Impressionism of Renoir, this book outlines the course taken by painting and sculpture in Europe during the 19th century. Faced with the untidy sprawl of individualism which followed the French Revolution and threw up isolated geniuses like Goya, the author nevertheless charts the currents in what was predominantly a century of Naturalism and also - whilst artists were increasingly preoccupied with the inner man - of great landscape-painting when Friedrich, Corot and the Impressionists proper added light and atmosphere to the former achievements of the great Dutch masters.

Masters in Art: French school. Bastien-Lepage through Ingres
Paris 1937
Author: James D. Herbert
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501720775
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
This elegant and theoretically informed book, illustrated with forty-five photographs, explores the cultural significance of six exhibitions or new museum installations, all opening in Paris between mid-1937 and early 1938: the commercially oriented world's fair titled L'Exposition Internationale des Art et Techniques; the historical Musée des Monuments Français; the ethnographic Musée de l'Homme; two massive art retrospectives, one sponsored by the state of France and the other by the municipality of Paris; and L'Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme.James D. Herbert capitalizes on the proximity of these disparate exhibits to show how they competed with and yet also complemented one another in visually rendering the full scope of human accomplishment through time and across the globe. In this task, Herbert argues, they both succeeded and failed in interesting and productive ways. He asserts that the exhibitions projected and, in a sense, created (created precisely through the act of projection) the real world that they ostensibly only represented. In fact, Herbert argues, the exhibitions developed a particular sense of French national identity—one that, in managing to be at the same moment both inwardly focused and beneficently expansive, would present a vivid contrast to the growing German nationalism of the Third Reich. His epilogue takes a final look at these issues from the perspective of Jean Cocteau's 1950 film Orphée. A ground-breaking work in cultural history, Paris 1937, with its insightful examination of objects from a variety of fields, is a pioneering text in the field of visual studies.
