This book provides a critical assessment of the impact of UN Resolution 1325 by examining the effect of peacebuilding missions on increasing gender equality within conflict-affected countries. UN Resolution 1325 was adopted in October 2000, and was the first time that the security concerns of women in situations of armed conflict and their role in peacebuilding was placed on the agenda of the UN Security Council. It was an important step forward in terms of bringing women’s rights and gender equality to bear in the UN’s peace and security agenda. More than a decade after the adoption of this Resolution, its practical reality is yet to be substantially felt on the ground in the very societies and regions where women remain disproportionately affected by armed conflict and grossly under-represented in peace processes. This realization, in part, led to the adoption in 2008 and 2009 of three other Security Council Resolutions, on sexual violence in conflict, violence against women, and for the development of indicators to measure progress in addressing women, peace and security issues. The book draws together the findings from eight countries and four regional contexts to provide guidance on how the impact of Resolution 1325 can be measured, and how peacekeeping operations could improve their capacity to effectively engender security. This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, gender studies, the United Nations, international security and IR in general.

Gender discrimination pervades nearly all legal institutions and practices in Latin America. The deeper question is how this shapes broader relations of power. By examining the relationship between law and gender as it manifests itself in the Mexican legal system, the thirteen essays in this volume show how law is produced by, but also perpetuates, unequal power relations. At the same time, however, authors show how law is often malleable and can provide spaces for negotiation and redress. The contributors (including political scientists, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, and economists) explore these issues-not only in courts, police stations, and prisons, but also in rural organizations, indigenous communities, and families. Writers, editors, activists and prostitutes. Women along the US-Mexico border served in many more capacities than simply wives and mothers, though those were their primary roles. Historically, religion was the link between women and the written word. According to the editors of this volume, Mexican women—particularly those from the privileged classes—had access to secular reading beginning in the 1800s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several periodicals dedicated to the education of the “fairer sex” emerged. Though the male voice initially predominated, women began contributing poetry and essays to various publications and eventually became editors of their own magazines and newspapers. This collection of ten essays, based on the examination of publications from the US-Mexico region between 1850-1950, explores the role of women in print culture. Leading to a better understanding of women in the history of Mexican border life, the essays are organized in three thematic groupings: “Exploring the Archives: Women and Written Culture in Northeastern Mexico during the Late Nineteenth Century,” “The Cultural History of Women and Print Culture” and “A Transcultural View of Women and their Role as Activists in Northern Mexico and Texas.” The scholars who researched the archival collections of newspapers, magazines and other print matter write about a variety of topics, including the participation of women in the War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the belief females were inferior and should not be educated outside the home and even the cultural history of prostitutes. Published as part of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project, this compendium of academic articles sheds light on women’s roles—especially as readers, writers and editors—in the Texas-Mexico border region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
