Introduction La ménopause est une période correspondant au dépistage des cancers. La participation aux dépistages des cancers est moindre chez les femmes en milieu populaire ou peu diplômées. Quelles sont les représentations de la ménopause de femmes vivant en quartier populaire ? Comment ces représentations peuvent impacter sur leur participation aux dépistages des cancers ? Quelles sont leurs attentes vis-à-vis du médecin traitant ? Méthode Une étude qualitative a été réalisée à l'aide d'entretiens semi-dirigés auprès de 12 femmes âgées de 45 à 55 ans vivant à Saint-Denis et recrutées auprès d'associations de quartier. Résultats La ménopause apparaît comme une délivrance avec l'arrêt des règles et de la fécondité. Malgré tout, les représentations négatives de la ménopause dominent. La ménopause marque une dégradation dela santé et une perte du statut social avec le début du vieillissement. La ménopause est perçue comme une fatalité. Ces représentations sont influencées par l'histoire de chaque femme. Les représentations positives de la ménopause comme une libération des grossesses sont associées à une moindre médicalisation de la vie des femmes entraînant moins d'occasions d'être informées sur les dépistages des cancers par un médecin. Cependant, elles sont demandeuses d'information sur la ménopause et la prévention secondaire à cette période. Elles souhaitent une plus grande implication du médecin traitant. Les sources d'information sur la ménopause et le dépistage des cancers sont principalement la transmission orale par les autres femmes et la télévision en particulier étrangère. Le médecin traitant semble garder une place qualitativement importante. Conclusion La connaissance des représentations de la ménopause chez les femmes de classe populaire et immigrées permettrait au médecin traitant d'aborder ce sujet et de contribuer à réduire les inégalités sociales vis-à-vis des dépistages des cancers à cet âge.

The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie.
