El trabajo analiza y caracteriza la estructura y la movilidad urbana de cinco ciudades españolas de tamaño medio y, a partir de estos resultados, cuantifica la influencia de la estructura urbana en las características de los desplazamientos al trabajo y evalúa diferentes políticas de usos de suelo. Para ello, se utilizan variables relacionadas con los desplazamientos al trabajo: porcentaje de viajes realizados andando, en automóvil o en transporte público, vehículos-kilómetro medios por empleado realizados en automóvil y el grado de autonomía. Se relacionan estas variables con la estructura urbana, con el índice de motorización y la oferta de transporte público o de aparcamiento. Finalmente, se considera que las políticas de usos del suelo son una parte muy importante en la planificación del transporte urbano, especialmente a largo plazo, si bien deberán complementarse con otras, especialmente la gestión del aparcamiento.
