"La imagen de la mujer en la pintura española (1890-1914)" es un riguroso estudio que articula los diferentes tipos femeninos que aparecen en las artes plásticas españolas del fin de siglo con los nuevos ámbitos estéticos y culturales en los que se insertan. Aparecen nuevos tipos iconográficos, la prostituta, la mujer trabajadora o la mujer liberada, que conviven con arquetipos tradicionales, la elegante, la mendiga, la gitana o la madre y la esposa, que, sin embargo, se veían sometidos a profundas mutaciones. A finales del siglo XIX se fraguan una serie de cambios que afectan a la vida cotidiana y que cristalizan en la pintura finisecular a través de la imagen de la mujer. Ésta se convierte en protagonista de los nuevos ámbitos que atraen la atención de los artistas: la intimidad familiar, el mundo del trabajo, la moda, la relevancia social, los bajos fondos o las nuevas formas de ocio, de amor y de sexualidad. La pintura del fin de siglo constituye un ejemplo indiscutible respecto al papel del arte en la creación y difusión de estereotipos femeninos.

The Hebrew Bible and art reside at the core of this book, which analyzes the iconographic representation of several women of the Bible. The contributors consider the ways in which the biblical texts regarding these women had been read and understood throughout time and the means by which they were represented. Each study also explores the different values associated with these representations according to the problems, worries and concerns of each period. “The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” delves beneath the traditional “English-only” narrative of U.S. history, using Spain’s participation in a series of international exhibitions to illuminate more fully the close and contested relationship between these two countries. Written histories invariably record the Spanish financing of Columbus’s historic voyage of 1492, but few consider Spain’s continuing influence on the development of U.S. national identity. In this book, M. Elizabeth Boone investigates the reasons for this problematic memory gap by chronicling a series of Spanish displays at international fairs. Studying the exhibition of paintings, the construction of ephemeral architectural space, and other manifestations of visual culture, Boone examines how Spain sought to position itself as a contributor to U.S. national identity, and how the United States—in comparison to other nations in North and South America—subverted and ignored Spain’s messages, making it possible to marginalize and ultimately obscure Spain’s relevance to the history of the United States. Late nineteenth-century Spanish fiction is populated by adulteresses, prostitutes, seduced women, and emasculated men - indicating an almost obsessive interest in gender deviance. In Marginal Subjects, Akiko Tsuchiya shows how the figure of the deviant woman—and her counterpart, the feminized man - revealed the ambivalence of literary writers towards new methods of social control in Restoration Spain.
