The Commonwealth and the Francophonie are comparable organizations which seek to play a similar role on the international scene from different perspectives, the former focusing on economic and social development and the latter on cultural and linguistic diversity. Having risen from the ashes of the British and the French Empires, they have evolved over the years and tried to shed their colonial legacies. If they have become recognised international organizations, they still need to gain legitimacy among the populations they are representing. However, each organization advocates a set of values, underpinned by a shared culture and language among its members, which is an invaluable resource of soft power. Therefore, they should use this soft power astutely to increase their legitimacy within their constituencies and make the best use of their multicultural nature, in order to promote cross-cultural dialogue, one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century.
