Publisher: Stake Books
ISBN: 0578655187
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
This first edition of Stake experts' African Geopolitical ATLAS aims to provide decision-makers with a snapshot of the geopolitical changes taking place on the continent during the 2018-2019 study period. It is a collection 84 geographical and thematic maps on topics ranging from African countries' military spendings, to the available croplands, or surface water covering. It's a bilingual edition (French, English). The concept is that of a collection of 30 thematic maps and 54 country monographs divided into three parts. To produce this ATLAS, the editing team focused on the decision-making value of the mapped data, i.e. their capacity to provide the essential elements for an informed decision on the chosen themes. As such, it is a public policy-oriented publication, intended to provide useful benchmarks for decision-making. More than just maps, these are 84 outlooks of Africa in 2020.

Book Description
A pioneering work, full of detail and depth of knowledge about Africa ... a must read! Two powerful forces converged to shift global development in the last three decades from the West to the East and Asia. These same forces now make Africa the "construction site of the century." Africa in the decade 2040- 2050 will have a population of 2.5 billion people. Together with China and India, Africa will surely affect our planet's future! "Africans are and will continue to be the beneficiaries of two dramatic global transformations: first, the shift of wealth from the West to the East and the South; second, the impact of the universalization of the digital age. The OECD stated that the first transformation is " ... the most important shift in the history of humanity;"the second marks the emergence of new forms of human civilization ... This book documents these transformations now taking hold in Africa, however incomplete , unequal and difficult. But these changes are robust and decisive. In Africa, like everywhere else in the world, strategies and actions must be put into place to seize the moment which is so unique in global history." - Jean-Louis Roy, from the IntroductionJean-Louis Roy is a prolific author and renowned diplomat, public figure, journalist, professor with a life-long interest and commitment to Africa. He was the editor-in-chief of the important Montreal daily newspaper Le Devoir; Delegate General of Quebec in Paris, France; Secretary General of La Francophonie; President of Law and Democracy, and President and Director General of BAnQ. His forthcoming book is a collection of his essays on Africa spanning the four decades, 1971-2011. His previous publications with Mosaic Press are Manso Musa (2019), The Age of Diversity: The New Cultural Map (2016), Ontario in Transition: Achievements and Challenges (2013), The Future of French: Cultural Competition in the 21st Century (2010).

International Human Rights Law in Africa

International Human Rights Law in Africa PDF Author: Frans Viljoen
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 019162683X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 661

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and analytical overview of human rights law in Africa. It examines the institutions, norms, and processes for human rights realization provided for under the United Nations system, the African Union, and sub-regional economic communitites in Africa, and explores their relationship with the national legal systems of African states. Since the establishment of the African Union in 2001, there has been a proliferation of regional institutions that are relevant to human rights in Africa. These include the Pan African Parliament, the Peace and Security Council, the Economic, Social and Cultural Council and the African Peer Review Mechanism of the New Partnership for Africa's Development. This book discusses the links between these institutions. It further examines the case law stemming from Africa' most important human rights instrument, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, which entered into force on 21 October 1986. This new edition contains a new chapter on the African Children's Rights Committee as well as full coverage of new developments and instruments, such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on Enforced Disappearances, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Three cross-cutting themes are explored throughout the book: national implementation and enforcement of international human rights law; legal and other forms of integration; and the role of human rights in the eradication of poverty. The book also provides an introduction to the relevant human rights concepts.
