La dyslexie est un trouble neurodéveloppemental nuisant au développement normal de la fluidité en lecture. Certains processus de base à la lecture pourraient être atteints chez les dyslexiques et entraîner des répercussions touchant les représentations de haut niveau des mots en découlant : orthographique, phonologique et sémantique. Un de ces processus de base est le déploiement spatio-temporel de l'attention sur des séquences de stimuli multiples alignés à l'horizontale. L'efficacité de ce déploiement pourrait être étroitement liée à l'expertise en lecture chez les normo-lecteurs, et des irrégularités dans celui-ci pourraient être observées chez des dyslexiques. Malheureusement, la caractérisation de ce déploiement en contexte de reconnaissance de mots écrits, son implication dans la vitesse de lecture et (potentiellement) même dans certaines habiletés langagières demeurent largement sous-spécifiées. Le premier article de cette thèse vise à révéler les divergences du déploiement de l'attention dans le temps et dans l'espace pendant la reconnaissance d'un mot familier chez un groupe d'adultes dyslexiques par rapport à un groupe de normo-lecteurs. Les groupes sont appariés en termes d'âge et de fonctionnement intellectuel. Cet objectif est poursuivi avec la technique de sonde attentionnelle. Les résultats révèlent que les dyslexiques dirigent moins de ressources attentionnelles vers la première lettre d'un mot, ce qui est sous-optimal considérant que la première lettre d'un mot est particulièrement informative sur son identité. Le deuxième article de cette thèse vise à déterminer si les habiletés en lecture de texte et de traitement phonologique chez les dyslexiques peuvent bénéficier d'un entraînement attentionnel court. Un protocole utilisant un entraînement visuo-attentionnel (NeuroTracker) et un entraînement placebo chez une vingtaine d'adultes dyslexiques met en évidence des gains systématiques immédiatement après l'entraînement actif. L'ordre des entraînements (actif puis placebo, ou placebo puis actif) était contrebalancé entre deux groupes. Ces gains s'observent en vitesse de lecture, et même au niveau de la conscience phonologique. Le troisième article de cette thèse apporte finalement une contribution additionnelle significative pour l'évaluation de la vitesse de la lecture chez les adultes universitaires franco-québécois. L'utilisation des phrases-tests d'un outil existant (MNRead) a été intégrée à un protocole de présentation visuelle sérielle rapide pour l'évaluation de la vitesse de lecture. En plus de cet ensemble de phrases-test, quatre autres ensembles de phrases-test ont été normés. L'outil développé permet d'obtenir une mesure de la vitesse de lecture fiable chez un même individu à différentes reprises (Exp. 1) et il satisfait différents standards psychométriques (Exps. 1 et 2), en étant notamment sensible à la présence des difficultés en lecture retrouvées chez les dyslexiques (Exp. 2). En somme, il appert que certains processus visuo-attentionnels sous-tendent l'expertise en lecture et que ceux-ci pourraient présenter des irrégularités chez les dyslexiques. La caractérisation d'un déploiement attentionnel sous-optimal en reconnaissance de mots familiers tout comme les bénéfices obtenus en lecture et en traitement phonologique subséquents à un entraînement attentionnels mettent en lumière l'importance de ces processus de base en lecture.

Un grand nombre d'études examinant les aspects cognitifs et neurobiologiques de la lecture ont étés conduites dans les dernières décennies. Cependant, la stratégie qui sous-tend l'identification de mots pour des lecteurs experts et la manière dont l'attention visuo-spatiale est déployée dans le temps et l'espace visuel demeurent méconnues. L'étude de Blais et al. (2009) nous apporte une avancée significative dans nos connaissances à ce sujet. La présente étude se propose d'étendre leur investigation initiale à l'aide d'un protocole capable de spécifier comment l'information visuelle est extraite dans l'espace et dans le temps au cours d'une tache de reconnaissance de mot chez des lecteurs neurotypiques. 16 étudiants ont été testés à l'aide d'une tâche inspirée de la méthode des « Bulles ». Ils devaient lire des mots français de cinq lettres présentés pendants 200 ms et échantillonnés dans l'espace-temps avec un ratio signal/bruit variant aléatoirement et de manière indépendante pour chaque position de lettre. Un bloc de 150 essais de pratique était d'abord complété, pendant lequel le ratio signal/bruit était ajusté de manière à maintenir le taux de succès à 51%. Ensuite, quatre blocs de 150 essais chacun étaient complétés, eux même suivis d'un nouveau bloc de 75 essais d'entrainement afin de réajuster le ratio signal/bruit maximum. Enfin, quatre blocs additionnels de 150 essais chacun étaient complétés. Les analyses examinent comment les variations temporelles du ratio signal/bruit déterminent le taux d'acuité des participants. Des images de classification dans le domaine temporel ont été construites pour chaque participant en soustrayant la somme pondérée des profils temporels de ratio signal/bruit des essais incorrects de ceux associes à une réponse correcte. Nous avons également construit des images de classification dans le domaine temps-fréquence qui indiquent la contribution de bandes de fréquences spécifiques pour l'efficacité d'encodage en fonction du temps. Les images de classifications individuelles étaient transformées en scores Z afin d'être sur une même échelle et pouvoir ainsi calculer des moyennes de groupes. La significativité statistique était déterminée par l'application du test Pixel. Les résultats suggèrent un processus d'extraction des lettres sériel, dans lequel l'ordre des lettres est fonction de la valeur diagnostique de cette lettre pour l'identification correcte du mot. Ces observations sont inconsistantes avec un modèle d'extraction parallèle, généralement admis pour expliquer l'absence d'effet de longueur de mot dans la lecture experte. Elles semblent en effet indiquer un mode de traitement sériel des lettres à l'intérieur duquel le traitement de plusieurs lettres conjointes reste possible. L'absence d'effet de longueur du mot dans un contexte de traitement sériel serait expliquée par l'hypothèse que le nombre de lettres à identifier (et/ou le nombre de fixations attentionnelles requis) demeure fixe, quelque soit la longueur du mot. Cependant, cette hypothèse reste encore à étayer; en testant ce protocole sur des mots de différentes longueurs.

A child with developmental dyslexia or an adult with a reading disorder following brain damage might read the word shoe as 'show', why does this happen? Most current information processing models of reading distinguish between two alternative procedures for the pronunciation of a printed word. The difference between these concerns the level at which orthography is translated to phonology in one, the word-level procedure, a word is read aloud with reference to knowledge specific to that whole word. In the other, the sub-word-level procedure, a printed word is pronounced with reference to knowledge about smaller segments which occur in many different words. Both procedures contribute to normal skilled reading and its acquisition. But if one of the procedures is disrupted, then oral reading will be forced to rely on the alternative routine. Surface dyslexia is a general label for any disorder of reading which results from inadequate functioning of the word-level procedure and in consequence abnormal reliance on sub-word level translation from orthography to phonology. Originally published in 1985, this book provides new evidence about the diverse manifestations of surface dyslexia in adult neurological patients and in children with developmental disorders of reading. The data are drawn from speakers of a range of languages with distinct orthographies. This report provides the most comprehensive and rigorous analysis of Iraqi income and expenditure in several decades. The report makes extensive use of the Iraq Household Socio-Economic Survey, the first nationwide income and expenditure survey since 1988. IHSES data is complemented income and expenditure data from a wide range of other measures of living standards, allowing us to analyze living standards in a holistic way. The analysis presented here was performed with two main goals first, to inform the Government s Poverty Reduction Strategy; and second, to serve as a baseline for future assessments of changes in living standards and the identification of critical issues for deeper examination. Iraqi living standards have two unusual characteristics. First, they have fallen over the past generation. Second, they feature surprisingly little inequality. These characteristics are both rooted in Iraq s recent history of authoritarian government, war, military occupation, insurgency, and civil strife leading to infrastructure destruction and population displacement. There have been few opportunities for individuals to prosper from professional or entrepreneurial activities. Decades of neglected investment have resulted in deterioration of social services and economic infrastructure. Consequently, individuals have lacked capabilities to prosper and an investment climate conducive to prosperity. School enrollment and life expectancy have declined. Extremely low returns to education reflect the combination of poor educational quality and lack of employment opportunities. In terms of economic infrastructure, access to reliable electricity and water, and even access to paved roads are low, are further reflections of decades of neglect. While the upper end of the distribution has been pulled down by a lack of opportunities, the lower end has been supported by direct government provision of food. The Public Distribution System (PDS) provides 85 percent of food needs. While PDS has been useful as a safety net for the poor and the vulnerable, the system is expensive, inefficient, and fiscally risky. Indeed, PDS food rations account for a far greater share of public spending than does education or health. Going forward, Iraq faces two main challenges. First, although Iraq does not have to develop from scratch, it faces a formidable challenge in re-development. Second, a shift by the Government is required from direct provision of basic subsistence toward investment in human capacities. The Government can provide an enabling environment through investments in economic infrastructure and services to business and citizens, thus allowing the population to make productive use of education and their own labor. Both challenges are now being taken up by the Poverty Reduction Strategy, which articulates a detailed set of required actions and outlines priorities for government spending.
