La depresin afecta las actividades diarias de quien la padezca, pues esta enfermedad se distingue por presentar una sensacin de no servir para nada, de tristeza, de autoculpa, desnimo, ausencia de esperanza, alteraciones del sueo, alteraciones en el comer, abandono de s mismo, y por supuesto problemas en el rendimiento acadmico, entre otros. Lamentablemente es una realidad indeseable, que no se puede negar, es uno de los trastornos psicolgicos mas asistidos por la poblacin mundial. Ya la Organizacin Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) en septiembre de 2001, la ha llamado la epidemia del siglo, pues en el 2010 alrededor de 25 a 35 millones de personas presentaron depresin en Amrica. De los cuales slo un 15 por ciento son diagnosticados y reciben un tratamiento adecuado. Por su parte Dr. Dean Jamison, profesor de Salud Pblica en la Universidad de California, en Los ngeles y su equipo de colaboradores contratados por la Organizacin Mundial de la Salud (OMS), realizaron un estudio prospectivos y estimaron que para el ao 2020, la depresin ser uno de los mayores problemas de salud pblica, convirtindose en la segunda causa de incapacidad en el mundo. En Mxico el Instituto Nacional de Estadstica y Geografa (INEGI): dieron a conocer las estadsticas de suicidios en la poblacin de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos 2009, de 5,190 personas, se suicidaron, de los que 4201 eran varones y 989 mujeres. La mayora pre?ri el mes de mayo, la minora, febrero. Del total de estas personas que se quitaron la vida, 2,197 fueron solteros y 1,978 casados. Y menciona adems que los Adolescentes y jvenes entre 15 y 24 aos, ocupan el primer lugar en sectores vulnerables, en segundo lugar se ubican personas adultas y en tercero adultos mayores, sin embargo se ha detectado un incremento en nios menores de 10 aos. En el mbito universitario hablando de depresin, en un estudio realizado, en la Universidad Veracruzana se encontr: en Psicologa un 7.4% de depresin en los hombres mientras que en las mujeres fue un 9.1%, no siendo signi?cativa la diferencia, en Enfermera quienes presentaron mayor porcentaje de depresin fueron los hombres con un 11.1%, y las mujeres se encontr solo un 3.6%. (Barradas y cols., 2013. Pag.135). El propsito de este libro, es orientar al pblico en general, especialmente a maestros y quienes de alguna manera estn en contacto con adolescente y jvenes universitarios, a conocer lo determinante que es, que los profesores que dan clases en diferentes niveles educativos, que conozca, que es la depresin, sus causas, sntomas, consecuencias en el rendimiento acadmico y sobre todo las alternativas para detectarla en el aula y prevenir mayor afectacin en los estudiantes. Lo importante que es, estar consciente que podemos ser facilitadores de una mejor calidad de vida para quienes nos rodean, ya que un diagnostico oportuno con su respectivo tratamiento e?caz, la depresin se supera. Todos podemos poner un granito de arena para construir una mejor sociedad.
