La cryothérapie, utilisée en médecine depuis l'antiquité, fait partie des thérapeutiques complémentaires couramment recommandées en chirurgie buccale pour prévenir œdèmes et douleurs post-opératoires. Récemment, l'intérêt pour la cryothérapie s'est étendu à l'endodontie, en tant qu'adjuvant possible du traitement endodontique conventionnel. Les douleurs endodontiques, que ce soit en peropératoire en l'absence de silence opératoire ou en postopératoire, sont encore trop fréquentes malgré des efforts constants pour améliorer la prise en charge de la douleur. Le praticien peut alors rencontrer des difficultés pour achever la thérapeutique endodontique ; les patients ont fréquemment recours à diverses médications avec possibilité d'effets indésirables. Ce travail met en lumière les effets de la cryothérapie sur le message nociceptif, évalue les modalités de mise en œuvre et son indication en endodontie. Même si les études demeurent rares à l'heure actuelle, la cryothérapie pourrait donc représenter une solution complémentaire dans la gestion de la douleur en endodontie.
