L'événement socio-historique radicalement révolutionnaire et humaniste qu'a constitué l'indépendance haïtienne n'a pas donné lieu à une dynamique de Progrès, mais à une société recluse, anomique et fragile. Le système social haïtien s'est donc révélé incapable de réaliser l'intégration moderne. Ainsi, arrive-t-il actuellement à une phase de perte d'équilibre totale et se retrouve au bord du précipice de l'Histoire. Cette périlleuse situation sociétale témoigne de la profonde et longue crise haïtienne du développement. Celle-ci résulte du fait que les principaux sous-systèmes sociétaux : le sous-système culturel, le sous-système social, le sous-système politique et le sous-système économique n'ont pas su remplir adéquatement leurs fonctions respectives. Ils ont en effet fonctionné de manière anachronique, perverse et chaotique. Cette étude, constituant sinon une nouvelle réflexion sur Les causes de nos malheurs (1882), du moins une nouvelle Enquête sur le développement (1974), ne s'inscrit nullement dans un schème explicatif défaitiste. Elle tente plutôt de procéder à l'intelligibilité des facteurs qui ont empêché la société haïtienne de se structurer et de fonctionner de façon moderne, ainsi que de se transformer méliorativement.

Haiti is a failing state. The country is still unable to provide basic needs such as employment, food, housing, healthcare and education to a majority of its inhabitants in over two centuries after its revolution and Independence of 1804. Relatively incompetent, both the nation’s government and its opposition ignore moral politics, and instead, focus on corruption and fighting each other. Though free from French rule, the country remains tied to its slave past and violent history. It seems like a socioeconomic and urban consensus cannot be achieved in order to carry out sustainable solutions for the people. This book, From Revolution to Chaos in Haiti, 1804-2019: Urban Problems and Redevelopment Straregies, is an attempt to analyze this situation from a historical perspective. First, the Haitian Revolution of 1804 is displayed to show the violent and bloody struggles of outstanding leaders and warriors against colonial powers for the making of a great political and independent nation. Second, Haiti’s decline is analyzed starting from the assassination of its first leader, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, in 1806 to the country’s bottom rank in the global stratification during the 2010’s along with the impact of the catastrophic 2010 earthquake. The main factors noted within this decline are linguistic, agricultural, urban and (HIV, AIDS, TB) healthcare issues and undercapitalization along with ideological confusions (capitalism, neoliberalism, socialism, social democracy) and political instability.

Thinking in Public provides a probing and provocative meditation on the intellectual life and legacy of Jacques Roumain. As a work of intellectual history, the book investigates the intersections of religious ideas, secular humanism, and development within the framework of Roumain's public intellectualism and cultural criticism embodied in his prolific writings. The book provides a reconceptualization of Roumain's intellectual itineraries against the backdrop of two public spheres: a national public sphere (Haiti) and a transnational public sphere (the global world). Second, it remaps and reframes Roumain's intellectual circuits and his critical engagements within a wide range of intellectual traditions, cultural and political movements, and philosophical and religious systems. Third, the book argues that Roumain's perspective on religion, social development, and his critiques of religion in general and of institutionalized Christianity in particular were substantially influenced by a Marxist philosophy of history and secular humanist approach to faith and human progress. Finally, the book advances the idea that Roumain's concept of development is linked to the theories of democratic socialism, relational anthropology, distributive justice, and communitarianism. Ultimately, this work demonstrates that Roumain believed that only through effective human solidarity and collaboration can serious social transformation and real human emancipation take place.

After Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, aid workers and offers of support poured in from around the world. Tellingly, though, news reports on the catastrophe and relief efforts frequently included a pejorative description of the country that outsiders were determined to rebuild: the troubled island nation, a nation plagued by political violence. There was much talk of inventing a "new" Haiti, which would presumably mimic Western modes of development and thus mitigate political instability and crisis.
