EU development cooperation

EU development cooperation PDF Author: Karin Arts
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526137348
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. It is increasingly recognised that EU development cooperation policy has failed to meet its stated aims. In this book, Arts and Dickson ask the obvious and important question: if the policy doesn’t work, why bother with it? The authors assess why EU development policy has become largely ineffective, citing among the external causal factors the liberalisation of trade, and the growing influence of US and international actors such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund upon EU policy. It also considers contributing factors within the EU such as the enlargement of its membership and the resulting shifts in priorities. It is this analysis of internal and external factors affecting the decline of EU development policy that makes this study both innovative and unique. It brings together an impressive range of contributors from different disciplines resulting in a thorough and intelligent assessment of the debate. This study will appeal to advanced level undergraduates and academics of European politics in general, EU integration, development studies, and International Relations.

Book Description
NOW IN ITS FIFTH ANNUAL EDITION, The Reality of Aid continues to present the most comprehensive and rigorous independent analysis available of the aid and development policies of the world's richest nations, and exposes the gaps between rhetoric and reality. Part I presents a consideration of current issues in development cooperation in the context of globalisation and the increasing importance of private aid flows. Part II gives a full-report on the performance of OECD countries and the European Union over the last year, and also includes a report on the continuing Lom negotiations between the EU and Africa. Part III gives a Southern perspective, with chapters on development and cooperation in Argentina, Central and Eastern Europe, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Latin America, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Part IV reviews trends in aid policy and spending by Northern governments and NGOs, with 'at a glance' tables and charts which compare donors' performance on issues such as poverty eradication, gender, emergency relief, leadership and public information. Throughout, information is presented in easily interpreted diagrams and graphs. First produced in 1993, The Reality of Aid has established itself as a unique source of independent evaluation and comment on aid policies and development. It is indispensable for all in the field, whether in the official or voluntary sectors. Originally published in 1997

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134205066
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 658

Book Description
Events of the past twenty years, including the Cold War and the War on Terror, have meant that the environments of international development co-operation have changed extensively, with dramatic consequences for development policies and North-South relations in general. Perspectives on European Development Cooperation takes stock of such changes, describing and analyzing the new European development agenda, including the role of the European Union. Essays by prominent authorities in the field examine the development policies of individual donor countries and focus on the principles and objectives governing aid strategies and the performances of these policies. This book will be of interest to students of development studies and those involved in determining development policy.

Globalization and Governance

Globalization and Governance PDF Author: Ann Marie Bissessar
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 9780786427154
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Despite the controversial nature of globalization, there is no doubt that the pace and intensity of global interactions has been multiplied exponentially over the last few decades. Criticism of globalization is generally arranged into three camps: political, economic and cultural. Political critics point to the status of the small state and conclude either that it is in retreat, or that the state has reconstituted itself to confront the challenges posed by globalization, thereby transforming itself into a "competition state." Economic critics hold that globalization is nothing new, that international transactions are in the logic of capitalism and that the trade along the silk route goes back centuries. Cultural critics protest that globalization is taking us headlong into the "homogenization of the world." Others warn of new fault lines that would lead to "a clash of civilizations" and international conflicts along those lines. Others lament that cultural globalization will end with the Americanization of the world. This collection of essays, like the debates themselves, is divided into three parts. The first section focuses on the political aspects of globalization. In one essay, "Globalization and the Caribbean," the essayist argues that internationalization leaves no room for small countries in the Caribbean. The essays in the second section are devoted to an economic inquiry into the process and impact of globalization. In "Inequality and the Division of Gains at the Global Level," one essayist notes that the logic of economic theory is being overwhelmed by the interests of the powerful, and that the concerns of the poor countries are important only to the point where they begin to impact the well-being of the rich. The final section explores the issue of cultural and social integration. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
