Models of the Family in Modern Societies

Models of the Family in Modern Societies PDF Author: Catherine Hakim
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351771485
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
This title was first published in 2003. This text reports on two nationally representative surveys of men and women in Britain and Spain, the former being funded by the Future of Work Research Programme and conducted by the ONS. Catherine Hakim presents a study of ideal models of the family and family roles, work orientation, patriarchal values and lifestyle preferences, showing how these impact on women's marital histories, fertility, employment patterns and occupational segregation, but not on men's labour market participation. Lifestyle preferences and work orientations have a strong impact on women's activities, and especially on married women's choices, but patriarchal values have almost no impact on behaviour. The book also covers educational homogamy, housing classes, labour mobility and contrasts between ethnic minority groups in core values and labour market participation.

Researching Work-Family Discourses

Researching Work-Family Discourses PDF Author: Eduardo R. Infante
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443831026
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Gender talk and work-family issues have enticed many researchers worldwide in their wish to provide key insights into the globalised burden of balancing work-family demands. However, most studies follow the traditional quantitative methodology which fails to embrace the complexity of these issues. The present book is aimed to cover this gap by researching work-family discourses also with qualitative methodologies based on social representations of work, family, and gender roles. The book details the process step-by-step, with the hazardous duty of unveiling the hidden social messages of androcentric worlds towards defining degenderised societies in androgynous terms. Notwithstanding its complexity, the work-family discourses are retrieved from British best awarded TV sitcom Only Fools and Horses.

Building National Campaigns

Building National Campaigns PDF Author: David Dalton
Publisher: Oxfam
ISBN: 0855985747
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 117

Book Description
For many organisations, campaigning is a new type of activity and few have had the opportunity to help each other build capacity to campaign. This book draws on Oxfam International's experience in supporting national labour-rights campaigning initiatives at local and national level. The authors describe and analyse what happened in five campaigns in Colombia, Morocco, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, and the United States. All faced enormous obstacles, and all were able to overcome them through innovation, new ways of working in alliance, and patient persistence towards their target. This book will be of interest to all campaigning individuals and organisations, not just those working on labour rights. The analysis includes learning points and examples of good practice. The book offers a menu of approaches and activities and readers can choose those which are appropriate and useful to their situation. A practical and up-to-date resources section helps the reader explore the issues further.
