University and School Collaborations During a Pandemic

University and School Collaborations During a Pandemic PDF Author: Fernando M. Reimers
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030821595
Category : COVID-19 Pandemic, 2020-
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

Contemporary Logistics in China

Contemporary Logistics in China PDF Author: Ling Wang
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811010528
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
This book is the sixth volume in a series entitled “Contemporary Logistics in China,” authored by researchers at the Logistics Center, Nankai University. In the spirit of the five preceding volumes, published annually in previous years, this book carries on the ideal of providing a systematic exposition on the development of logistics in China to the English-speaking community. Specifically, this volume captures China’s logistics development at a crucial turning point. On the one hand, it echoes the new horizon advocated by the Government’s One-Belt-One-Road Initiative for global cooperation; on the other, it resonates with the new blueprint of implementing the main contents of the 13th Five-year Plan on logistics development. Subjects covered include the macro-factors pertaining to logistics development, region-specific plans, industry-wide transformation, globally oriented moves, and current hot topics. Expositions and analyses on these subjects are based on the latest available sources and statistical data. As with the previous volumes, the ultimate aim of this book is to present a timely portrait of the rapid growth of China’s logistics market and the status of its logistics industry’s evolution. In so doing, this book offers an in-depth analysis of the critical issues and dilemmas amid the ongoing, dynamic and multi-faceted development, and presents a valuable reference source for interested readers in the academic and professional fields.

Freight Forwarder's Intermediary Role in Multimodal Transport Chains

Freight Forwarder's Intermediary Role in Multimodal Transport Chains PDF Author: Hans-Joachim Schramm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3790827754
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 375

Book Description
In this book, the business of international freight forwarding is examined from both a theoretical and empirical point of view with a special emphasis on multimodal transport chains, including sea or air transport operations. In such contexts, the freight forwarder is always considered "The Architect of Transport", but this intermediary role seems to be largely neglected in research to date. Therefore, relevant concepts from economic theory and economic sociology are employed to produce both an intermediary and a network perspective of freight forwarding in order to provide a better understanding of this kind of transportation business. Furthermore, its intermediary role in such inherent network structures is explored by mapping relationship patterns in a stylized model framework applied to a questionnaire-based sample collected among freight forwarders engaged in such multimodal transport chains in Germany (especially from Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven) as well as in Austria in 2003.

The Research System in Transition

The Research System in Transition PDF Author: Susan E. Cozzens
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400920911
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
On a mountainside in sunny Tuscany, in October 1989, 96 people from 23 countries on five continents gathered to learn and teach about the problems of managing contemporary science. The diversity of economic and political systems represented in the group was matched by our occupations, which stretched from science policy practitioners, through research scientists and engineers, through academic observers of science and science policy. It was this diversity, along with the opportunities for infonnal discussion provided by long meals and remote location, that made the conference a special learning experience. Except at lecture time, it was impossible to distinguish the "students" at this event from the "teachers," and even the most senior members of the teaching staff went away with a sense that they had learned more from this group than from many a standard conference on science policy they had attended. The flavor of the conference experience cannot be captured adequately in a proceedings volume, and so we have not tried to create a historical record in this book. Instead, we have attempted to illustrate the core problems the panicipants at the conference shared, discussed, and debated, using both lectures delivered by the fonnal teaching staff and summaries of panel discussions, which extended to other panicipants and therefore increased the range of experiences reponed.
