Canonisation as Innovation PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004520260
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
Canonisation is fundamental to the sustainability of cultures. This volume is meant as a (theoretical) exploration of the process, taking Eurasian societies from roughly the first millennium BCE (Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Egyptian, Jewish and Roman) as case studies. It focuses on canonisation as a form of cultural formation, asking why and how canonisation works in this particular way and explaining the importance of the first millennium BCE for these question and vice versa. As a result of this focus, notions like anchoring, cultural memory, embedding and innovation play an important role throughout the book.

Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis (SET)

Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis (SET) PDF Author: Valentino Gasparini
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004381341
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1191

Book Description
In Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity’s most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the “Oriental religions”. The 26 contributions of this book, divided into three sections devoted to the “agents”, their “images” and their “practices”, shed new light on this religious movement that appears much more heterogeneous and colorful than previously recognized.

Communities and knowledge production in archaeology

Communities and knowledge production in archaeology PDF Author: Julia Roberts
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 152613456X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The dynamic processes of knowledge production in archaeology and elsewhere in the humanities and social sciences are increasingly viewed as the collaborative effort of groups, clusters and communities of researchers rather than the isolated work of so-called ‘instrumental’ actors. Shifting focus from the individual scholar to the wider social contexts of her work and the dynamic creative processes she participates in, this volume critically examines the importance of informal networks and conversation in the creation of knowledge about the past. Engaging with theoretical approaches such as the sociology and geographies of knowledge and Actor-Network Theory (ANT), and using examples taken from different archaeologies in Europe and North America from the seventeenth to the mid-twentieth century, the book caters to a wide readership, ranging from students of archaeology, anthropology, classics and science studies to the general reader.

Euboica

Euboica PDF Author: Michel Bats
Publisher: Centre Jean Berard
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
