Book Description
"Three generations - one vision" - with this slogan the company Dutton Ltd. presents their work on historical Bugatti racing cars. From 1909 to 1963 Bugatti, founded by Ettore Bugatti and based in Molsheim, Alsace, produced the most powerful racing cars of the time. Today Ivan Dutton still wants to serve this legend: His twelve employees are able to reproduce every original piece and to build whole cars using the old techniques. Koto Bolofo visited the Bugatti garage in Buckinghamshire near London and he was fascinated. He gathered impressions of the work in the spirit of the traditional industrial art, a spirit that the car industry lost some time ago. The photographs of this over-sized book tell the story of the mechanics restoring the Bugatti vintage cars. With their passion the people working at Dutton Ltd. are keeping an era of car racing alive.

Koto Bolofo: Say Cheese

Pages : 48

Book Description
Unconventional and delightful, Say Cheeseepitomizes Koto Bolofo's approach to fashion photography These photos were originally published in 2000 in Vogue Italia, then under the helm of the legendary Franca Sozzani, whom Koto Bolofo (born 1959) first met in 1984 and worked with for more than 25 years. Bolofo fondly remembers the exceptional creative freedom she gave him and other photographers at the magazine--Sozzani provided the clothes, they did the rest. And so it was with Say Cheese: Bolofo was given a wardrobe of female swimwear, and with the help of his regular stylist Nicoletta Santoro, he shunned professional models, instead enlisting a vibrant squad of real synchronized swimmers, California's Riverside Aquettes. The resulting images show a variety of female bodies at ease and play--floating and twirling in sparkling, sun-filled water, clad in retro looks, from Great Gatsbyflair to flowered 1950s bathing caps, and each wearing Bolofo's favorite accessory: a genuine smile.

Book Description
The horse has a long and rich history as a subject in the visual arts. In sculpture and painting, in the decorative arts, and most recently in photography, the horse has been celebrated for its cultural and social importance. Horse Power is a compelling photographic portrait of the horse today. From 12 to 17 September 2009, Bolofo documented life on the grounds of esteemed racehorse trainer Christiane Head-Maarek at Chantilly, France's famous racehorse town. Rising early each morning to make the most of the rare access he had gained, Bolofo photographed charming every-day occurrences - a blacksmith forging a horse shoe; filing a horse's hoof; grooming, walking and riding the animals - as well as making candid portraits of ambitious teenage jockeys-to-be. Bolofo explores every aspect of "horse power" - the physical strength of these million-dollar animals, their cultural and sporting status, and not least their noble beauty. Koto Bolofo was born in South Africa in 1959 and raised in Great Britain. Bolofo has photographed and made short films for magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and GQ. He has created advertising campaigns for companies including Herms, Louis Vuitton and Dom Prignon. Bolofo lives in the Vende, France, and his books with Steidl include Venus, I Spy with My Little Eye, Something beginning with S, Vroom! Vroom!, La Maison and Grande Complications.

Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter

Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter PDF Author: Koto Bolofo
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
"Sibusiso Mbhele And His Fish Helicopter" is a cinematic look at the life and work of a visionary South African outsider artist who sparked the jealousy, wrath, and ultimate rejection of his own community with his wondrous creations of scrap metal flying machines. Based on his eponymous film, originally screened in 2000 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Koto Bolofo's first monograph documents a young, talented South African sculptor forced to flee his rural home--a full-sized, hand-built metal facsimile of a helicopter--which stood as an oddity against a background of traditional thatched huts in his African village. Self-taught, Mbhele earned his living creating scrap metal sculptures of planes, cars, and bicycles from wire, car wrecks, oil tin drums, and other recycled materials. After making the headlines in the local newspapers, Mbhele's neighbors, jealous of his recognition and success, destroyed his creations and his beloved helicopter home. They had him jailed, and though he was later released, the tension and threat of further trouble was enough to make Mbhele take flight from his precious helicopter haven and head for the security of the city and the unknown.

Testament

Testament PDF Author: Chris Hondros
Publisher: powerHouse Books
ISBN: 1576877280
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
Testament is a collection of photographs and writing by late photojournalist Chris Hondros spanning over a decade of coverage from most of the world's conflicts since the late 1990s, including Kosovo, Afghanistan, the West Bank, Iraq, Liberia, Egypt, and Libya. Through Hondros' images, we witness a jubilant Liberian rebel fighter exalt during a firefight, a U.S. Marine remove Saddam Hussein's portrait from an Iraqi classroom, American troops ride confidently in a thin-skinned unarmored Humvee during the first months of the Iraq war, "the probing eyes of an Afghan village boy," and "rambunctious Iraqi schoolgirls enjoying their precious few years of relative freedom before aging into more restricted adulthoods." Hondros was not just a front-line war photographer, but also a committed observer and witness, and his work humanizes complex world events and brings to light shared human experiences. Evident in his writings, interspersed throughout, Hondros was determined to broaden our understanding of war and its consequences. This unyielding determination led Hondros to take dozens of trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, even as the news turned elsewhere. During these "routine" trips, Hondros examined and observed daily life in these war-torn societies. His inventive Humvee picture series frames the ever-changing landscapes of these countries, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of those most affected by conflict. "One of the ongoing themes in my work, I hope, and one of the things I believe in, is a sense of human nature, a sense of shared humanity above the cultural layers we place on ourselves [which don't] mean that much compared to the human experience." —Chris Hondros As a photographer working in the world's most difficult and dangerous places, Chris Hondros had the distinctive ability to connect his viewers with people embroiled in far-flung and sometimes obscure conflicts. He recognized the shared humanity among those affected by war, regardless of culture or beliefs, and he was determined to share their challenges to the wider world in the hope of provoking thought, raising awareness, and fostering understanding. In the introduction to the book, Getty Images Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein writes, "Chris believed that his work could and would make a difference. He dedicated and ultimately lost his life in pursuit of that belief. I have no doubt that Chris was correct. Images can and do influence public opinion, galvanize people and societies, and force governments to change. They bring much-needed focus and attention to the suffering of people who are otherwise unable to communicate their plight." Inspired by his life, work, and vision—The Chris Hondros Fund endeavors to bring light to shared human experiences by supporting and protecting photojournalists. Through their generous support, Getty Images' proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Fund. For more information please visit www.chrishondrosfund.org.

Laundromat

Laundromat PDF Author:
Publisher: powerHouse Books
ISBN: 1576876233
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
Laundromats are a quintessential part of the New York City landscape: an indispensible element to many city dwellers' lives, they're an ersatz utility room shared with dozens of strangers at any given time, a moist environment of humming machines and strange clothes. No other public facility gathers so many people under one roof to engage in one of the most intimate rituals in which the modern human routinely performs, that of making clean again one's outer and under garments. What New Yorker has never experienced the dread of removing another's...stuff...from a dryer having completed its cycle in order to get on with it and be released from the temporary prison of chore.... Laundromats are as varied as the people inside. They often reflect the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the neighborhood they reside in (announcements, flags, and symbols displayed often reveal something about their mainly mom-and-pop owners), yet they additionally possess a story of commercial storefront design, inspired and mundane: the trend date of awning design and lettering; the poster advertising for cleaning; the refreshment options for adults and their charges. Neighborhood laundromats are one of the last holdouts of the disappearing storefronts of New York City as small shops are driven out of business by chains and venture-capital initiatives. Like the beloved Korean green grocer/bodega/Arab deli, someday soon there could be far fewer of these ugly ducklings, and another genuine element of New York's street life will be...washed away. Laundromatwas photographed from 2008 to 2012 and represents all five New York boroughs and most of its neighborhoods.

Manhattan Sunday

Manhattan Sunday PDF Author:
Publisher: Aperture Foundation
ISBN: 9781597113762
Category : Manhattan (New York, N.Y.)
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Manhattan Sunday is part homage to a slice of New York nightlife, and part celebration of New York as palimpsest--an evolving form onto which millions of people have and continue to project their ideal selves and ideal lives. In the essay that accompanies his photographs, Richard Renaldi describes his experiences as a young man in the late 1980s who had recently embraced his gay identity, and of finding a home in the mystery and abandonment of the club, the nightscape, and then finally daybreak, each offering a transformation of Manhattan from the known world into a dreamscape of characters acting out their fantasies on a grand stage. Drawing heavily on his personal subcultural pathways, Renaldi captures that ethereal moment when Saturday night bleeds into Sunday morning across the borough of Manhattan. This collection of portraits, landscapes, and club interiors evokes the vibrant nighttime rhythms of a city that persists in both its decadence and its dreams, despite beliefs to the contrary. Manhattan Sunday is a personal memoir that also offers a reflection the city's evolving identity--one that still carries with it and cherishes the echoes of its past.
