Book Description
Participation in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Kodiak Management Area salmon subsistence permitting program has been low; therefore, accurate harvest estimates have been difficult to achieve. This project provided education and outreach about the permit program as well as an evaluation of harvest assessment methods. The project included key respondent interviews, household harvest surveys, and the engagement of residents, fisheries managers, ADF&G researchers and local research assistants through public meetings and workshops.

Kodiak Management Area Weir Descriptions and Salmon Escapement Report, 2018 PDF Author: Brad A. Fuerst
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Escapement (Fisheries)
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
In 2018, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game operated 9 fish counting weirs and 1 fish pass in the Kodiak Management Area (KMA). Operation of these weirs began in mid-May and continued through mid-September, depending upon the run timing of Pacific salmon populations in the different systems. Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, sockeye O. nerka, coho O. kisutch, pink O. gorbuscha, and chum salmon O. keta were enumerated. Steelhead trout O. mykiss and Dolly Varden char Salvelinus malma were also enumerated. The data from the weirs provided the basis for inseason management actions regulating the commercial, sport, and subsistence fisheries in the KMA. Surveys of Pacific salmon were also conducted from fixed-wing single-engine aircraft and by foot on other area salmon streams without weirs to facilitate inseason stock assessment. A combined total of 7,193,946 salmon were estimated using weir, foot, and aerial survey counts in the KMA during 2018. The total consisted of 5,378 Chinook, 1,501,385 sockeye, 186,696 coho, 5,154,742 pink, and 345,745 chum salmon.

Book Description
This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.
