Heroic black knight Lina can fell monsters and slay dragons with ease, but when it comes to romance, she’s still a total rookie! After dozens of dates ending in failure, she’s ready to give up on her quest of finding a husband, even if the idea of a family is an alluring one. The hitch? Marriage is a requirement for all black knights! You see, the ability to use old magic—essential for safely slaying dragons—is a rare gift, so there’s staggering pressure for black knights to pass their power on to the next generation. Worse yet, Lina’s in immediate danger without a partner to bless her armor. But it’s going to take the right person... Enter the prime minister’s aide, Joshua Granwell, a handsome and talented white mage who’s a perfect match for her mana. He’d make the ideal spouse for Lina—except she does not want to marry a noble. Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and the Knight's Tale

Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and the Knight's Tale PDF Author: Frieda Elaine Penninger
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 9780819192189
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
This book examines Troilus and Criseyde and The Knight's Tale as poems which work the same plot to contrasting tragic and joyous endings but for the same purpose, of exploring the folly of electing the temporal world over the eternal. It demonstrates that the tragedy of Troilus and Criseyde is a consequence of the folly of relying on Fortune and temporal bliss and works through the pattern of a similar dependence in The Knight's Tale. It then develops the portrayal of the protagonists of the poems as Fortune's Fools through a scrutiny of courtship as game of play, of caritas and cupiditas contrasted with the implications of pity, mercy, grace, and love as used in temporal contexts in the poem but defined theologically elsewhere in Chaucer, and of the limitations of knighthood and chivalry as defined by the world of the poems.

The Book of the Knight Zifar

The Book of the Knight Zifar PDF Author: Charles L. Nelson
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813194911
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 509

Book Description
The Book of the Knight Zifar (or Cifar), Spain's first novel of chivalry, is the tale of a virtuous but unfortunate knight who has fallen from grace and must seek redemption through suffering and good deeds. Because of a curse that repeatedly deprives him of that most important of knightly accoutrements—his horse—Zifar and his family must flee their native India and wander through distant lands seeking to regain their rank and fortune. A series of mishaps divides the family, and the novel follows their separate adventures—alternatively heroic, comic, and miraculous—until at length they are reunited and their honor restored. The anonymous author of Zifar based his early fourteenth-century novel on the medieval story of the life of St. Eustacius, but onto this trunk he grafted a surprising variety of narrative types: Oriental tales of romance and magic, biblical stories, moralizing fables popular since the Middle Ages, including several from Aesop, and instructions in the rules of proper knightly conduct. Humor in the form of puns, jokes, and old proverbs also runs through the novel. In particular, the foolish/wise Knave offers a comic contrast to the heroic Knight, whom he must continually rescue through the application of common sense. Zifar was to have an important influence on later Spanish literature, and perhaps on Cervantes' great tale of a knight and his squire, Don Quixote. All those with an interest in Spanish literature and medieval life will be grateful for Mr. Nelson's excellent translation, which brings to life this extraordinary early novel.
