Book Description
This study reconstructs for the first time Marguerite of Navarre’s leadership of a broad circle of nobles, prelates, humanist authors, and commoners, who sought to advance the reform of the French church along evangelical (Protestant) lines. Hitherto misunderstood in scholarship, they are revealed to have pursued, despite persecution, a consistent reform program from the Meaux experiment to the end of Francis I’s reign through a variety of means: fostering local church reform, publishing a large corpus of religious literature, high-profile public preaching, and attempting to shape the direction of royal policy. Their distinctive doctrines, relations with major reformers – including their erstwhile colleague Calvin – involvement in major Reformation events, and the impact of their unsuccessful attempt are all explored.

Excerpt from The Life of Marguerite D'angoulème, Queen of Navarre, Duchesse D'alencon and De Berry, Sister of Francis I, King of France, and Author of "the Heptameron," Vol. 1 of 2: From Numerous Unpublished Sources, Including Ms. Documents in the Bibliothèque Imperiale, and the Archives Du Royaume De France, and Also the Private Correspondence of Queen Marguerite With Francis I, Etc The author has assured herself of the strictest historical accuracy: and none of the authorities named at the foot of her pages have been quoted without previous examination. In every instance, the number of the volume, and the page in which the passage cited is to be found, has not been given; but as the narrative extends only from the year 1492 to 1549, an easy reference to that era in the works quoted, will verify any of the author's statements. This concession of the regent to popular clamour, was hailed by the Faculty with triumph. The members could scarcely credit their senses, when the court, before so arbitrary and despotic in snatching away the victims they had doomed to destruction, sent a bishop with a message informing the Sorbonne of the fact they were so sorely alive to--" that Luther's detestable doctrines were everywhere gaining fresh adherents throughout the kingdom," and requesting its advice for the extirpation of heresy. At any rate in this the Sorbonne proved itself consistent--that which it had propounded to king Francis on the arraignment of Lefevre, Berquin, and Briconnet, it again addressed to the more compliant ears of the duchess d'Angoulme. " Since the sermons, the disputations, the protests, and books, which we have so frequently put forth against this heresy fail in arresting its progress, the writings of these heretics must be prohibited by proclamation; if these means are not sufficient, force and constraint must be employed against the persons of these false teachers; for those who resist the light mast be subdued by punishments and terrors/' was the response of the university to the demand...
